Chicago – The episode begins with a young girl, later revealed to be Sun Mai (Dianne Doan), being attacked by two men in a dark alley. She doesn’t have a problem dealing with the two men

Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) races to meet Bobby Exley (Eric Graise) at Chi-Town Gloves where he learns all about Sun’s background and disappearance. According to Bobby, she’s destined to be a professional fighter and he’s been helping her build her online profile. Bobby denies them being involved, although his response suggests he wouldn’t be opposed. Their search eventually leads them to the alley behind the gym where Colter learns about Sun’s beef with Dake (Stephen Adekolu).  After finding Sun’s bloodied cell phone, they decide to question Dake.

Dake clearly doesn’t respect Bobby and nearly comes to blows with Colter until Art Arfano (Danny Wattley) intervenes. Art is more than willing to share what he knows and gets Dake to admit that his argument with Sun was nothing more than a clash over available gym equipment. Once Dake resumes his training, Art apprises them of Sun’s recent worries about immigration.

The mention of ICE gives Colter the idea of using Reenie Green (Fiona Rene) to lean on her immigration contacts. He also correctly assumes that Apple Mai (Eelyse Dinh) didn’t want the police involved for this reason. Apple later appears comprehensive to accept their help and mentions that she can’t offer any kind of reward. After relenting, she leads them to George Prine (Byron Noble), a shady lawyer who failed to deliver on his promises to fast-track their Visa applications. Although it’s not revealed, Bobby finds a video file on Sun’s laptop that only increases his and Colter’s desire to speak with Prine.

Reenie meets with a federal immigration lawyer named Jonathan Tyner (Steve Dhillon) and works her magic to enlist his help

Colter isn’t too surprised to learn from Teddi (Robin Weigert) and Velma Bruin (Abby McEnany) that George Prine isn’t a real lawyer Along with Marv Johnson, he has a laundry list of known aliases and small-time crime resume to match. Colter encounters immediate resistance from Marv’s receptionist (Anastasia Bandey) but spares little time letting her know he is well aware of Marv’s criminal ventures. Marv eventually comes out of his adjoining office when Colter leaves. After a quick debate with his receptionist about how Colter is and his intentions, Marv pulls a revolver from his desk and says there’s only one way to find out.

Colter leads Marv into an alley where he easily disarms and intimidates him into revealing what he knows about Sun. Marv blames everything on the loan sharks, Scott (Akeem Hoyte-Charles)/Marco (Adam Kirschner) he’s in cahoots with but does admit to tricking Sun into a meeting. As far as tracking them down goes, Marv claims they don’t have an office and only ever met with them in a traveling van. He has a description and plate number for the van.

Reenie isn’t any better received by Apple than Colter was during their meeting. Apple might even be colder with Reenie, given that she was led to believe she was of Vietnamese descent. Apple appears to lighten up when she not only learns that Sun hasn’t been picked up by ICE but Reenie wants to help her with her green card.

After Bobby assures Apple she’s in good hands, he receives a call from Colter, with news of the loan shark angle and a partial plate. Bobby has little problem tracking the loan shark’s partial plate number. After a quick search, Colter is back on the phone with Bobby, sharing his discovery. Invigorated by the discovery of a duffle full of money, Bobby wants to join Colter but is ordered to stand down. Colter ends up hiding in the back of the van when the men return to the van.

Reenie continues to work on Sun and Apple’s immigration while Bobby monitors Colter’s phone signal. Before Bobby notices an anomaly with the signal, he and Reenie share a revealing conversation about Colter’s lone-wolf mentality and how he owes Colter for getting him out of a sticky situation with the Russian mob.

Colter’s trip takes an unexpected turn when the loan sharks receive a call from their boss. Colter uses the opportunity to phone Bobby and plant Sun’s cell phone so he can track the signal.

Once Bobby arrives, the signal leads them to what appears to be an underground fighting event. Bobby is ordered to wait in the car but doesn’t sit on the sidelines for long. It doesn’t take him long to discover what’s going on thanks to an excited spectator (Jon Ray Dy Buco).

It takes some convincing and dropping Bobby’s name but Colter eventually convinces Sun to leave with him. Before she agrees, he learns that the loan sharks are leveraging her mother and their debt to force her to fight. When he does manage to convince her to leave, their escape is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of one of the loan sharks. After a quick toss-up, Colter and Sun are held at gunpoint. Bobby’s arrival and intervention provide Colter with the opening needed to surprise the loan shark.

Although Colter capitalizes and disarms the loan shark, he Sun, and Bobby are soon held at gunpoint once again when Art arrives and reveals his involvement. Despite failing to lure Art into a fight, Colter uses the man’s hesitation to disarm him and dispatch the loan sharks. During the ensuing hysteria, Art escapes to the parking lot but is soon stopped by Colter thanks to a much-needed assist from Bobby, once again.

Bobby and Reenie visit Apple and Sun to reveal that Prine/Marv is not only being arrested for his various crimes but his arrest makes them eligible for something known as a U-Visa.

Later that day while finally sneaking a look at his father’s, Ashton Shaw (Lee Tergesen)  file, a quick phone call between Colter, Velma, and Teddi reveals that Art’s criminal charges will likely result in the closure of his gym. Not only that, but Reenie has managed to keep Sun’s involvement hidden. Colter quickly ends the call when he sees Bobby and Reenie approaching. Colter not only turns down Bobby’s offer of payment, but he also turns down an invitation to celebrate. Despite seeming lying about his urgency to get to his job, Colter does tell Bobby that he wouldn’t have been successful without his help.

Tracker Review

I’m happy to say I felt that episode 7 was an improvement from 6. Perhaps it was the fight feel/angle or maybe the crackling of Colter’s lone wolf exterior. Whatever it was, I’d give the episode a 5.7 out of 10. Although Bobby is not a preferred taste, I can appreciate the significance of his contributions to the team and seeing Colter acknowledge them. I’d say the same for Reenie. I would have liked to and probably would have rated the episode higher if it wasn’t for feeling strangled by the ulterior immigration agenda.
