Floyd’s Pelican Bar Jamaica

I don’t mind telling you that I consider myself a bit of an expert on weird worldwide watering holes. One of my favorite quirky cantinas is Floyd’s Pelican Bar, located off the south coast of Jamaica.
Floyd’s Pelican Bar is a rickety assemblage of driftwood and palm fronds, built on stilts about a mile out to sea. Accessible only by boat, Floyds has no running water, no electricity and – don’t say you weren’t warned – no toilet.
What Floyd’s Pelican Bar does have is a lively domino table, the infectious beat of reggae tunes, and a rum punch that will knock your cockles off. The few intrepid travelers who venture to Floyd’s Pelican Bar are inevitably outnumbered by regular locals. But, no worries, because the sun, the sea, the music and the rum all conspire to foster an easy camaraderie. – Susan Henry
