Where to enjoy Kent’s finest produce in and around Canterbury

Kent is home to the production of a number of goods including Ales, Chapel Down and Kent Crisps. But, what about where to get them beyond the supermarkets?

The Fordwich Arms lies at the heart of the smallest town in England, Fordwich, on the outskirts of Canterbury. Reopening at the end of last year it has quick become a place that many people are visiting for a modern pub dining experience on the riverside of the Stour. This is particularly due to its location in relation to Canterbury and its high-speed rail service to London. The menu incorporates locally sourced ingredients which vary by the season. Having received spectacular reviews from leading UK publications it really is a must visit.

Wheelers Oyster Bar is the oldest restaurant in Whitstable, the town famous for its oysters. Wheeler’s has long been thought to serve the best oysters in Whitstable, with a menu that consists of 6 choices of starter, main and dessert, changing seasonally. There is no service charge and you can bring along your own wine without a corkage fee. As well as eating in there is the option to buy their homemade food and take it away – perfect for a beach picnic if you pre-order. Wheelers Oyster Bar is well established, having proudly served local quality seafood for more than 150 years. Due to its intimate nature, it is thoroughly advised to pre-book over the phone.

The Goods Shed Canterbury opened in 2002, in a former railway barn, giving it a rustic feel. It comprises of a daily farmer’s market and restaurant, hosting stalls with fresh bread, Kentish fruit and veg, a butchery and fish stall, and cheese makers of Canterbury with the addition of a small selection of Italian, French and Spanish food produce, alongside pressed wines and other Kentish bottled drinks. Sitting next to the train station it is in a prime location for both Londoners and locals. Suitable any time of day from breakfast through to evening drinks.

These are just a handful of the great places in Kent all serving locally sourced fine foods. Let us know your favourites or if you find any new places we might not know about yet!
