Brief History of Mumbai

The history of Mumbai goes back to ancient times when it was a cluster of seven islands inhabited by Koli fishermen and other indigenous tribes.

These islands were ruled by various dynasties such as the Mauryas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Silharas, and Yadavas until the 13th century when they came under the control of the Delhi Sultanate. In 1534, the Portuguese took over the islands from the Sultan of Gujarat and named them Bom Bahia, which means “Good Bay“.

They built forts, churches, and trading posts on the islands and converted many of the local people to Christianity. In 1661, the islands were given to the British as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza who had married King Charles II of England.

The British changed the name of the island to Bombay and made it their main trading base in India. Bombay grew rapidly under British rule, becoming a major port, railway center, industrial center, and metropolitan city.

It also saw many social, political, and cultural movements, such as the Indian National Congress, the Quit India Movement, the Bombay Presidency Association, and the Indian cinema industry.

After India’s independence in 1947, Bombay became the capital of Bombay State, which consisted of present-day Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 1960, Bombay State was divided into two states on linguistic basis and Bombay became the capital of Maharashtra.

In 1995, the city was officially renamed Mumbai after the local deity Mumbadevi. Mumbai is now a global city with diverse populations, cultures, and economies. It is also a center for the arts, entertainment, education, and innovation.

Mumbai is also home to the Bollywood film industry, which makes the largest number of movies in the world. Mumbai is a lively and dynamic city that never sleeps.
