We took a quick minibreak in Tallinn a couple of weeks ago. We took the ferry on Sunday afternoon, spent Monday in the city and took the ferry back home on Tuesday morning.
Lovely 5 star hotel
I had booked a room at a Hotel we haven’t visited before. It was a five-star boutique hotel at the outskirts of the old town called Savoy Boutique Hotel. The welcome to the hotel was warm and we were even offered a glass of bubbly at check-in. There was also a message waiting in the room from the managing director of the hotel including his telephone number in case we needed something during our stay. The room was lovely and the bed was perfect. The only complaint was that someone had cranked up the heating in the room to the max. We were able to sort it out by turning on the AC and opening the windows. The other problem was the underfloor heating in the bathroom that was so hot you had to wear slippers. The floor remained extremely hot throughout our visit. At check-in, we also got to order our breakfast for the following morning which was a nice touch.
Dinner at Chedi
For our first night I had booked a table at Chedi, a wonderful Asian restaurant we have visited twice before. As it was a Sunday night the restaurant was virtually empty so service was fast but still friendly. I opted for two starters while hubby had a starter and a main. I had dim-sums with prawn-bamboo and prawn-scallop filling and crispy wasabi prawns. Hubby started with a fresh Tuna salad and then had duck with Szechuan pepper sauce. The food was delicious and we left the restaurant happy with full stomachs.
A day of walking
The following morning we had a nice breakfast with preordered omelets at the hotel. After breakfast we ventured out for a walk through old town and then headed to the Telliskivi neighborhood. Once there we stopped for some coffee at a cute coffeeshop called Fika. We only had coffee, but the place had some delicious looking pastries and sandwiches as well. After coffee we sought out a local chocolate shop called Chocokoo to buy some handmade chocolates. We bought a box 10 assorted pralines to take home. Then we walked back towards the city center and stopped for lunch at a pub. We had fish and chips which was fine but nothing to write home about. Then we slowly ventured back to our hotel and after some contemplation decided to go visit a shopping mall. We only bought some garlic bread snacks at a supermarket to take home but managed to spend an hour or so window shopping.
Dinner at TarTar köök + baar
For our second night I had booked a table at TarTar köök + baar. This was a new place to us but I had read good reviews and wanted to try it out. I opted for a portion called Tokyo which was a tuna tartare with avocado, teriyaki, scallion and masago. I also ordered some Pecorino cheese with truffel & Szechuan pepper honey. Hubby had a classic beef tartare to start and then hot stone grilled tuna with orange miso sauce. You grilled the tuna yourself at the table using a hot stone. I also had a nice cocktail with dinner called Rhubarb Juniperium made with local rhubarb gin and orange ginger ale. Another super delicious dinner that left us happy and full.
The next morning we enjoyed another made to order breakfast before heading to the harbor to catch the ferry home. We had a nice 36 hours in Tallinn and just getting to travel even there felt like a luxury after all the COVID restrictions. I am now trying to plan a trip for late May around my birthday and our 25th wedding anniversary but it is still a work in progress.
