The vibrancy with which los porteños, the locals of Buenos Aires, live their lives and the strong European influence mixed with South American tradition make this Argentinian capital unlike any place in the world. To truly see it all and live like a local, rent a beautifully simple apartment in the Recoleta neighborhood of town, which has easy access to a massive variety of restaurants, bars and nightlife. Recoleta is a safe area of town and there are quite a few foreigners in the area, meaning visitors will have an easy time accessing things they need even if their Spanish is less than perfect.
Don't miss Recoleta's famous cemetery, hailed as one of the world's best and most beautiful cemeteries (pictured right). Among the many notable interments there are Eva Perón, Nobel Prize winners, literary greats, and presidents of Argentina.
Delicious Traditional and International Food
With so many different cultural influences in Buenos Aires, you can really eat anything your heart desires, from sushi to pizza to Mexican food. However, Argentinian cuisine is absolutely delicious and should not be missed! For traditional fare, head straight to Cumaná, located on Av. Rodríguez Peña in the Recoleta neighborhood. Their delicious Locro,
a traditional hearty stew, is a great option if you’re unsure what to order. Pair that with a glass of lovely Argentinian Malbec and maybe some empanadas to start and you are set for an amazing gastronomical evening.
Tango or Football?
Tango is a massive part of life in Buenos Aires, so to get in on the action catch a show at Cafe Tortoni, a glamorous French-Style cafe with nightly live tango shows. Additionally, get involved in the true national religion of Argentina, football, by going to a Boca Juniors game or taking a tour of the stadium.
Final Tips
Buenos Aires is an active city with plenty to enjoy year-round. Because of it’s location in the southern hemisphere, Argentina’s seasons are reversed to the northern hemisphere’s. May through August (winter in Buenos Aires) is very mild and more like spring than a snowy, freezing winter, while November through February gets very warm with temperatures averaging at 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Buenos Aires is a massive city, so it is advisable that visitors keep their wits about them at all times, but with a little common sense, a visit to this port city can be an amazing, life-changing experience.
