5 Best Palaces of Kerala

The state of Kerala is not just popular for its geography but also equally visited for its historical attractions. Palaces are one among them. Kerala Palaces are an important part of the tourism of the state. The royal monuments with their rich history and impressive architecture beckon many tourists to appreciate the wonderful history India is proud to behold.

Some of the glorious palaces found in Kerala are:

Shakthan Thampuran Palace:

Also called Vadakkekara Palace this monument is in the city of Thrissur.  It was built in Dutch style in 1795 and is a prominent attraction of the city. The palace denotes a typical Kerala style of construction, Naalukettu and also has two storeys.

Koyikkal Palace:

The Koyikkal Palace can be found on the way to Poonmudi hill station and Courtalam waterfalls at Nedumangad which is around 18 kilometres from Trivandrum. The palace was built for the Queen of Venad Royal family in the traditional Kerala style with a courtyard and slanting roof. The palace houses a Folklore museum where you can find displays of folk art models, musical instruments and utensils. Another museum is the Numismatics museum which treasures a rare and priceless coin collectionand is situated on the ground floor of the palace.

Poonjar Palace:

Located at Poonjar in Kottayam district on the Pala-Erattupetta route, the Poonjar Palace replicates the Madurai Meenakshi temple. Tourists can allow themselves to be transported to a bygone, opulent era by setting their eyes on the amazing collection of royal artefacts in the palace. There are grand chandeliers, beautiful sculptures and jewel boxes, weapons of warfare and a palanquin. A nearby Sastha Temple with its stone walls on which the Chuttuvilakku or row of lamps are carved out is another major attraction here.

Bolghatty Palace:

Situated off Cochin coast on Bolghatty Island, the Bolghatty Palace was built by Dutch traders in 1744 AD. The palace was later used by the British Governors as residence during the British rule. The palace is now the property of the Kerala Government and has been converted into a heritage hotel with a 9-hole golf course, swimming pool and an ayurvedic centre.

Krishnapuram Palace:

Located in Kayamkulam around 47 kilometres from Alappuzha, the Krishnapuram Palace has been renovated with scientific techniques. The palace has lovely gardens, rare bronze sculptures and awesome paintings of which the Gajendra Moksham, a mural painting that spreads over 49 square metres is an astounding creation that attracts hordes of tourists.
