Imagine, you are at your village and trying to access a video uploaded recently on YouTube. Do you think that the video can be streamed. The answer mostly comes in a “NO”. I have been researching a lot about the raging topic and a topic which has been the topic of discussion for the people of every country nowadays. Yeah, I’m talking about Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality is a concept that is somewhat related to the availability of internet to people. As we know that India though is a developing country and is very near to the checkpoint of a developed country but living standards in India are lower than many developing countries. This has consequently lead to the non availability of internet in many parts of India. This is the reason for the fact that why the answers are mostly a NO to the above asked question.

Net Neutrality as defined by the people is a concept that will provide access to contents of internet to everyone without any discrimination. The discrepancies that are being talked about here are the different behavior which telecom operators bank on for different websites. Well, Net Neutrality sure has a lot of advantages over the current internet services in India because net neutrality will surely improve your experience over the Internet. This concept is very much in need especially in a country like India…. if the question arises why specially in India, the answer is that many telecom companies have been sort of betraying their customers….. let me rephrase that… they have been acting fraudulently to their customers. This is because big telecom firms such as Aircel, Reliance, Vodafone etc. have signed agreements with big website over the Internet such as Wikipedia, Facebook and Google which allows the users to access these websites for free while they have to pay for other sites. This is totally a violation to the definition of net neutrality which demands equal access to Internet. Why a betrayal ? Actually all other websites will never get a chance to showcase themselves and consequently we will be deprived of the better services, nobody else. I researched everywhere and it was really difficult for me to understand the purpose of net neutrality as they were written or shown in very difficult terms. I don’t want you all to suffer the same so I will be taking an example so as to explain the situation. Suppose you want to buy a product online and you surf the internet. You find two sites, say for example, Flipkart and Snapdeal. You find that products on Flipkart are better than those on snapdeal so you open the site but the site doesn’t load because your telecom operator has signed a deal with Snapdeal that their site will be loaded faster as compared to any other shopping website. This situation compels you to go back to Snapdeal website and buy products there. This is the main disadvantage of the current Indian internet services.

Now that I have explained the pros of net neutrality, I will be describing its cons. The disadvantages of the concept of Net Neutrality are not that adverse. If the concept of net neutrality is introduced, it will limit the market but simultaneously increasing its standard. Also the government won’t be able to
control the Internet completely and hence they will face intricacies while trying to remove the piracy and violent contents from Internet.

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has been given the responsibility for making the decision whether net neutrality will be accepted in India or not. In 2015 TRAI published a paper on net neutrality and asked the people to vote for the desired service. TRAI received around a million mails in support of net neutrality. Finally, in 2016 TRAI denied and banned the services of Facebook’s Internet.org and Free Basics concept. This was a major setback for Mark Zuckerberg. So, in all at the present moment India has adopted Net Neutrality after all the population supported it including famous politicians and celebs. I know that this blog seems a bit biased but believe me when I say that while reading about net neutrality I couldn’t find major loopholes in its concepts on the other hand the advantages are very much decent.
