Samsung’s Exynos flagship chips are a mainstream for many years now, and they have largely featured Samsung’s Mongoose Cpu Cores.
Sad to say, the Korean manufacturer is currently shutting down its CPU production. The layoffs reportedly enter effect from December 31.
The Korean maker confirmed the news to Android Authority, while also describing the reason behind the choice.
It is unclear exactly what this means for Samsung’s habit CPU strategies for 2020 and beyond. Samsung’s Mongoose Cpu Cores were largely utilized in its flagship Exynos chips, beginning with 2016’s Exynos 8890 at the Galaxy S7.
However, our very own testing using the Galaxy S10 show revealed that although the Exynos chipset provided better single core functionality compared to Snapdragon version, the Snapdragon variant conquer it in the majority of other important places.
In case Samsung is really abandoning its habit CPU cores to get flagship smartphones, then it is very likely the company will embrace Arm CPUs or semi-custom variations of those CPUs for future devices. Huawei now utilizes Arm CPUs in its flagships, while Qualcomm utilizes tweaked versions of those cores in its own Snapdragon 800-series of high-end chips. Qualcomm specifically previously employed entirely custom CPU layouts for many years prior to transitioning to some semi-custom version instead.
The information comes a few months later Samsung announced that it is working together with AMD to create mobile GPUs. But we are not hoping to see the first fruits of the venture anytime soon.
