The Kittensec Hacker group has claimed cyber attacks on various entities in Panama and Chile and even targeted the Italian Ministry of Justice.
The threat actor alleges having access to citizens’ data of the victims. However, the credibility of this assertion is awaiting verification, and the claimed victims have not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
As per a statement posted by the Kittensec hacker group, they have identified these individuals as their targets. However, the intentions or motivations of the attack remain unknown as there is no direct connection between the victims.
“Wake up, samurai, we’ve got a city to burn :3. Today, we are releasing citizen data of Panama, Chile & the Italian Ministry of Justice. The Panama leak consists of approximately 2,000,000 citizen data rows, while the Chile leak encompasses about 10,000,000 citizen records”, read the threat actor’s post.
KittenSec hacker group announces cyber attack spree
The situation becomes even more intricate as the threat actor post hints at the prospect of more data leaks in the pipeline, promising to maintain “high data quality” standards.
The KittenSec hacker group is known for its high-profile cyber attack campaigns. It has been observed targeting government organizations in various parts of the world over the last few months.
Their recent operation, named #OpRomania, saw the Romanian government’s website getting defaced.
During #OpRomania, the hackers took to popular social media platforms to communicate their intent.
The Romanian government website’s defacement was followed by an announcement on a widely used Discord server, where the group shared its mission and directed followers to its Telegram channel.
The leaked data, which reportedly included information from Romanian-state-related services and European databases, was disseminated via a massive zip file titled “Romania Leaks [KittenSec].zip,” weighing in at around 25GB of data.
The strange behavior of KittenSec hacker group
Despite their presence on the dark web, the KittenSec hacker group remains relatively mysterious.
In contrast to other ransomware gangs, the KittenSec hacker group shows a distinct interest in government data and has carried out multiple attacks with similar intentions in the past.
In one of their recent attacks, the KittenSec hacker group announced they had gained access to data taken from http://free.fr.
The group claimed responsibility for obtaining data from the French internet provider free.fr.
They stated that they were only able to download a fraction of the data before losing connection to the victim’s devices.
Despite this limitation, the hackers released the compromised data, including employee lists and other valuable information.
The group also revealed its plans to target more organizations in the future, hinting at forthcoming endeavors.
Their claim to steal and leak data without any monetary motive sets this hacker group apart, a departure from the practices of regular hackers and threat groups.
The group even provides a Monero address for donations on the dark web, emphasizing their commitment to conducting these data leaks without any financial gain.
