Was Kaido Defeated by Luffy on Purpose?

Luffy and Kaido’s fight has been going on for so long, but the rule of every Anime is “The main character is going to win”. The same happened here and Luffy finally bagged the win against “The Beast” Kaido. It was hard, and Luffy got his ass whooped several times, but it was finally done by the Gear 5, and the awakening of “Sun god Nika”. Visually, those who don’t focus on the background accept fate, but the real OGs are thinking “Was Kaido Defeated by Luffy on Purpose”? It is a bit complex than a simple Yes, or a No. Therefore, we are going to take you on a journey below.

Kaido’s Obsession with JoyBoy

On various occasions Kaido mentioned Joyboy, but what was the obsessions of Kaido with him? In the flashbacks, Kaido sitting with King, mentioned JoyBoy, indicating that he knew of the world more than he rarely spits out.

The reincarnation was also known to Kaido, as he said “couldn’t be JoyBoy either, it seems” while kicking Luffy’s ass. He also knew that a person who is a JoyBoy reincarnation is going to change the world for good.

Kaido committed suicide various times in the hope of being a JoyBoy and waking up as one, which was theoretical. That’s why he was also very fond of going to Wano, as JoyBoy was prophecized to be in the Land of Wano, instead of being somewhere else.

So, Kaido was always fond of being a JoyBoy himself, which he knew that he wasn’t, we will go into the details a bit later on in this article.

Kaido Not Killing Luffy

One thing that also pops up in every OG One Piece fan is, why didn’t Kaido kill Luffy the first time? Well, Luffy is the main character after all, and dreams of becoming the Pirate King at all costs. But, in the first two fights, Kaido could effortlessly kill Luffy, getting rid of him, who always gets in his way.

As a matter of fact, this has nothing to do with Kaido and his knowledge of JoyBoy. Kaido himself is super strong, but he also knows when someone else is strong-willed or simply powerful.

He always takes strong people in the Beast Pirates crew and has similar plans for Luffy. Kicking Luffy’s ass several times, he knew that Luffy won’t be able to do anything, and also, after the first time, he knew Luffy couldn’t be JoyBoy.

Therefore, there was no way that Luffy could be a danger to Kaido or the Beast Pirates, in sight of Kaido.

Was Kaido Defeated by Luffy on Purpose?

So, this takes up the question itself of whether Kaido was defeated by Luffy on Purpose or not.

  • Not knowing that Luffy was JoyBoy
  • Pointing out that “Luffy wasn’t JoyBoy as well”
  • Not killing him to recruit him in his crew. Recognizing Luffy’s power, and spirit
  • After getting defeated by Luffy, mentioning “The one who defeats me is going to be JoyBoy”

All of these combined make it clear that Kaido wasn’t defeated by Luffy on Purpose. Rather it was the polar opposite. He knew that when someone dies, they reincarnate as JoyBoy, but Luffy wasn’t the one being reincarnated the first time, therefore, he wasn’t, at least in the eyes of Kaido.

He was just not killing Luffy the first two times because he wanted Luffy to join his crew. Furthermore, his knowledge of JoyBoy was there, but he himself wanted to be the JoyBoy for a long.

Also, he wasn’t, which he also knew, but he was heartbroken, because JoyBoy was going to be the one who would change the world for good “As Prophesized”.
