Prepare to feel old as Guillermo Del Toro has announced exciting plans to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his iconic sci-fi action film Pacific Rim, released in 2013. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman, Pacific Rim initially faced underwhelming ticket sales domestically but managed to earn an impressive $411 million globally. This success led to a sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, helmed by Steven S. DeKnight, which unfortunately failed to impress critics and perform well at the box office. However, the franchise found new life with the arrival of Pacific Rim: The Black, an exclusive anime series on Netflix.
Earlier this year, Del Toro teased a potential re-release of Pacific Rim in IMAX 3D for a special weekend showcase in Los Angeles. The film has developed a loyal fanbase over the years, and a re-release would be the perfect way to celebrate its legacy.
What Made Pacific Rim Special?
In Pacific Rim, monstrous creatures called Kaijus emerge from a portal in the Pacific Ocean, causing widespread destruction. To defend against this threat, humanity creates the Jaeger program, piloting giant robots reminiscent of Power Rangers’ Zords. Raleigh Becket, a former Jaeger pilot, teams up with rookie pilot Mako Mori under Marshal Stacker Pentecost’s guidance to battle the relentless Kaijus and protect humanity. Along the way, they face personal challenges, uncover the true nature of the Kaiju threat, and make extraordinary sacrifices.
