At times Mucinous Carcinoma, it is rarely called colloid carcinoma which is rare form of IDC. This cancer spreads beyond into nearby health tissue and begins in the milk duct. In Mucinous carcinoma, the tumor is made up of abnormal cells that “float” in pools of mucin which is the main ingredient in slippery, slimy substance called as mucus.

Mucinous Carcinoma of the Breast

Usually mucus lines are found on the inner surface of our bodies like lungs, liver, our digestive tract and other vital organs. Some mucus is known to produce by many cancer cells, including Breast Cancer cells. Mucus is produced by many cancer cells which includes most breast cancer cells. With type of cancer, mucin surrounds the breast cancer cells and becomes part of the tumor. When looked under a microscope, it is seen as cancer cells are distributed pools of mucus.

Mucinous Carcinoma of the Breast Studies

Studies shows that mucinous carcinomas are pure as of 2 to 3% of invasive breast cancer and is only type of cancer, which is present in the tumor. With other types of cancer cells, about 5% of invasive breast cancer appear mucinous component within them. In men it is extremely rare.

Though at any age mucinous carcinoma can be diagnosed, however it tends to effect women after they have gone thru menopause. In 60s or early 70s is the age when it is found as well.

Mucinous carcinoma as an invasive breast cancer, responds well to treatment and tends to be less aggressive type. There is less chances to spread to the lymph nodes than other types of breast cancer.
