A new Centre of Excellence in Rwanda, developed in partnership with the French-based Institute for Research into Cancer of the Digestive System (IRCAD), is providing surgeons with a conducive environment to practice minimally invasive surgeries using robotic assistance. The centre aims to train medical doctors from across Africa in performing surgery using small incisions and endoscopic techniques. The new facility is seen as a turning point in surgical education and practice in Rwanda and sub-Saharan Africa, and is expected to improve access to high-quality surgical care in the region.
