The Jacksonville Jaguars returned to the field for day six of Training Camp and the first day in pads.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have full contact, padded practices. Tuesday gifted Jaguar fans to the all-important first day in pads, giving us our first (albeit, limited) glimpses into the battles between the offensive and defensive lines. Let's get into our observations from day six of camp. Also, I wanted to give a major shout-out to the many Jaguars media team and those working the beat for providing updates to those unable to make it out to the fields daily.

Practice Guest Appearances:

Former Texans and Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak, Jeremy Fowler, Takeo Spikes, and Clemson head coach Dabo Sweeney we're all in attendance for today's practice.

One on One's:

Unfortunately, no fan or media video was allowed after warmups today, so seven-on-seven and full-team video will be limited to team sources for today's practice. Note: The team did not have any receiver versus secondary one on ones today, even during practice periods when they didn’t allow video. Nevertheless, we have you covered with all the updates to keep you informed!

Four on Four/Seven on Seven Drill Notes:

Along with Erick Hallett, Antonio Johnson also had a big day with multiple pass breakups and his second red zone interception of training camp.

Trevor Lawrence also had a huge day with multiple touchdowns where he manipulated the defense with his eyes. This touchdown went to Jamal Agnew with another two touchdowns to wide-open Zay Jones & Christian Kirk. In addition to Jones' big day, Seth Williams has continued to step up after a big day on Monday with multiple impressive catches today. He's a different, bigger type of receiver for this Jaguars core of pass catchers.

After an early practice drop, Evan Engram immediately bounced back showing the crowd why they pay him the big bucks. His beautiful redone touchdown with Rayshawn Jenkins in coverage was a great route, perfectly delivered by Lawrence. That touchdown was immediately followed up by a toe-tap touchdown with Tyson Campbell in coverage. Fellow tight-end Gerrit Prince also continued to put great plays on tape with his sixth touchdown of training camp.

11 on 11 Drill Updates:

Once 11 on 11 began it truly became the Zay Jones show, with Jones securing a one-handed touchdown catch. Jones followed this up with two more touchdowns over the next few plays. He also had a touchdown called back for pass interference and had an incredible catch called out of bounds.

The running back duo of Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby will be a serious one-two punch for Jacksonville. Bigsby scored multiple red zone touchdowns and will be hard to bring down.

Trevor Lawrence has drastically improved in the red zone compared to last year's training camp. If this progress continues into the season, without question the 2023 Jaguars will more closely resemble the offense from weeks nine through 17.

D-Line vs O-Line:

With video being limited there were minimal takeaways from the trenches. K'lavon Chassion had success in his one on one matchup versus Cole Van Lanen. Raymond Vohasek also won his rep against Cooper Hodges, who started the day at backup guard.

Depth Chart Items of Note:

Note - Today's depth chart updates seemed to be heavily impacted by multiple players being nicked up before or in today's practice (below).

  • Cooper Hodges - 2nd string guard reps
  • Parker Washington - first-team WR reps
  • Seth Williams - first-team WR reps
  • Antonio Johnson & Daniel Thomas starting safety duo

Injury Takeaways:

With today's padded practice as a follow-up to yesterday's practice in shells (tops only), the team seemed to be taking the very conservative route with many of the players with even minor issues or injuries. This is the correct route during training camp and preseason, but something fans will want to keep an eye on as we continue throughout camp and preseason.

A benefit of having a few guys nicked up is that the coaching staff and front office seemed to lean into getting an extended look at a few other players prior to the first roster cutdowns. This also allows an extended look at those who could be pushed into starting roles if injuries were to occur in-season. A few players who gained additional reps today are:

  • Zay Jones: In very many ways today became the Zay Jones show, with Zay having a huge day with Ridley limited.
  • Parker Washington and Seth Williams: both received extended reps with the ones with Zay getting more starting and slot reps
  • Josh Wells: received starting right tackle reps with Anton Harrison limited
  • Antonio Johnson and Daniel Thomas: both beginning the day as the starting safety duo with Cisco limited with an assumed hamstring injury
  • Cooper Hodges: received extensive reps at guard with Ben Bartch still working to return from the training camp PUP list.

Injury Updates:

  • Anton Harrison's shoulder injury is minor, but more updates to come tomorrow.
  • Calvin Ridley was nicked up with an undisclosed issue; more updates to come tomorrow.
  • Andre Cisco is limited with an apparent hamstring injury, but no official word from the team to date.

Other Notes/Updates:

DiRocco's Practice Takeaways:

Cam Robinson working at left guard gives the team a much stronger offensive line rotation, with one more lineup option. This will be an interesting development to watch play out throughout preseason.

That's it from us today! What are your thoughts on day six of training camp practices? Are you excited to see more battles within the trenches now that the pads have finally come out? Which position battles are you interested in seeing?
