Giants training camp, Day 2: Takeaways from Thursday’s practice

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants completed their second practice of training camp on Thursday, once again working in shorts, t-shirts and helmets without pads. Here are a few of the things we learned.

Offensive line depth may be tested already

Starting left guard Shane Lemieux was carted off the field near the end of practice. The Giants have said only that Lemieux has a knee injury.

If Lemieux’s injury is a serious one, what options do the Giants have on their current roster?

Well, they could move Will Hernandez back to the left guard spot he occupied full-time for the Giants for the first 2½ years of his career. Whether they do that or not if Lemieux is out for an extended time, it leaves a guard spot to fill.

The Giants could turn to eight-year veteran Zach Fulton, signed as a free agent this offseason, to start. Fulton has played both guards and center over seven seasons and has started 90 of 107 regular-season games.

Kenny Wiggins has 38 starts in 79 regular-season games over eight seasons, but did not start any games last year and spent most of the season on the Giants’ practice squad.

Chad Slade is still around, but has played in only one game over two seasons with the Giants.

The other option might be Kyle Murphy, a 2020 undrafted free agent. Murphy was the highest-paid UDFA signed by the Giants a year ago. The former Rhode Island offensive lineman made the practice squad and was added to the 53-man roster in mid-November. He never appeared in a game.

“Colorful language?” Joe Judge? Never

One of Kelvin Benjamin’s complaints after the Giants showed him the door was that Joe Judge “sits there and cusses all day.”

Well, earth to Kelvin, Judge happens to be a football coach.

Judge’s response to that?

“The cussing part? I mean, look, I’ve got some colorful language. When we’re out at practice, you watch, you guys can figure that out. Listen, I know how to clean it up at the right time. I don’t curse in front of, you know, my wife. I don’t curse in front of your kids, your wife, grandmothers, my mother, whatever it is,” Judge said. “To be honest with you, I can’t specifically tell you exactly what it is, but it’s a little bit different when you’re out there, kind of heat of the moment in practice, teaching. Sometimes colorful language happens.

“You know, one thing I do have is a rule here, we’re never going to attack anybody personally. So, there are certain things, maybe cuss words, whatever, we’re never going to direct them at a player. There are certain times you have to use something for emphasis, or something comes up and a certain amount of energy on the field at the time, however, we’re never going to attack any player personally. I don’t care if you say a cuss word or anything else, we’re never going to do that. We’re always coaching mistakes, we’re correcting the position by helping the person. We’re never attacking the person.”

The laps are back

If you thought Judge had gone soft, umm, think again.

During an 11-on-11 portion near the end of practice center Nick Gates and second-round pick Azeez Ojulari were the first two players banished to run laps for committing some type of mistake that annoyed the head coach. They were followed shortly thereafter by undrafted center Brett Heggie and wide receiver Alex Bachman.

Can Judge doing slip ‘n slide fumble recovery drills be far behind?

David Sills is up to his old tricks

Sills was impressive in training camp a year ago before being placed on IR with a broken foot.

Sills is healthy now and up to his old tricks. Wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert referred to him last year as a “rep stealer.” On Thursday, Sills was first in line for every wide receiver drills, even jumping ahead of Kenny Golladay. When Jones needed someone to run a few routes post-practice, Sills was his guy.

It is way too early to know whether or not Sills can force his way into the competition for one of the final wide receiver roster spots. If he falls short, it’s certainly not going to be from lack of effort.

Quick hits

  • First-round pick Kadarius Toney was again held out of practice. Jude said the Giants would take things “day by day” with Toney and that they were “going to keep on ramping him up.”
  • Fourth-round pick Elerson Smith was off to the side and not practicing. No injury information has been made available on Smith.
  • Daniel Jones and Kenny Golladay were off on a second field working on routes while the Giants ran through some special teams work.
  • The Giants are expected to practice in shells on Friday, ramping things up as the acclimation part of training camp progresses.
