2021 Fantasy Football: Running backs to avoid - Fake Teams
Miles Sanders, Philadelphia Eagles. ECR: RB19. You could look at Weeks 14-17 from the 2020 season as a reason why Miles Sanders could be a value in 2021. From Weeks 14-17, Jalen Hurts was the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles and Sanders averaged 17.8 points per game in half-PPR formats (ninth-best among RBs in that timespan). While he’s shown flashes in his first two years with the Eagles, Sanders was far from reliable as a receiver in 2020. Sanders concluded last season with a 53.8% catch rate, which was the worst mark among running backs and tied for the 15th-worst mark in the entire NFL. With Hurts as the starter in 2021, Sanders may see his rushing workload take a hit as Hurts could look to run often with a lackluster receiving corps at his disposal. Not to mention, the Eagles added Kenneth Gainwell in the 2021 NFL Draft and they signed Kerryon Johnson in free agency. Neither Gainwell or Johnson figure to have a clear-cut role to begin the season, but if Sanders falters, then he could see his touches spread out to the other running backs on the roster. Even though I like Hurts as a leader on the field, I would feel a lot better about Sanders if Philadelphia made an upgrade at the quarterback position. But with me not feeling confident in Hurts and the offense of the Eagles, there aren’t many instances where I’m going to be targeting Sanders in fantasy football.

QUEZ WATKINS! The Eagles’ 2020 sixth-round pick was the obvious MVP of tonight’s practice. Not only was he responsible for the play of the night (as shown in the video above), he also made several other good grabs. It started when he leaped for a contested deep ball touchdown catch over Craig James in 1-on-1. Watkins then had two nice receptions over the middle in 7-on-7. The second of those two was an absolute hospital ball by Joe Flacco. Watkins shook off the big hit, though, and didn’t miss any practice time. Shortly after taking that bump, he was lining up as the gunner on punt coverage. The feeling here is that Watkins has been the Eagles’ best receiver in training camp (mind you, DeVonta Smith has missed time with a knee injury). The team is going to need to get him on the field if he continues at this pace.

At LT, the Eagles tried to find Jason Peters’ long-term successor in the 2019 draft when they traded up for Andre Dillard. While Dillard hasn’t panned out so far, Mailata, a seventh-round pick in 2018, has developed into starting-caliber left tackle who still hasn’t reached his ceiling. Mailata has had a great training camp after an encouraging 2020 season. Should Mailata continue to show improvement during the 2021 season, the Eagles should seriously consider thinking of him as Peters’ long-term successor instead. At DE, Brandon Graham is now 33 years old, and Ryan Kerrigan will turn 33 next week. Barnett has had something of a disappointing start to his career, at least for a former 14th overall pick. If he can stay healthy and put together a productive season, the Eagles will try to get a contract extension done with him, like they did this past offseason, to no avail. Sweat, meanwhile, like Mailata, has had an outstanding training camp, and after a semi-breakout season in 2020 in which he had six sacks and three forced fumbles, he could be poised for a big year in 2021.

Travis Fulgham: Because he doesn’t have elite speed, Fulgham isn’t going to run away from any cornerbacks. So his production has to come by using his big frame to go up and body defenders and high point the ball. Fulgham looks good running routes against Darius Slay and Steve Nelson, and he’s gotten his hands on a ton of balls so far, but he just hasn’t been able to finish the play. He’s had opportunities for a couple really good catches every day at practice, but he just hasn’t been able to finish. They’re not quite drops, but they are plays he needs to make if he’s going to be a factor. He needs to be better.

I remember asked Dan Rooney about hiring Tomlin at 34 when he was a first-year coordinator for the Vikings. “If we didn’t hire him now, we’d never have had the chance,” Rooney told me. The team will now have to wait, and Ball will be missing out on valuable reps in practice and in preseason games. Now with one potential swing tackle not living up to what the expectations were for him coming in, and the other out with an injury and missing out on practice and preseason reps, the Cowboys look to be heading back into the same situation as last year with Brandon Knight and Terence Steele as the primary backups. If they want to protect Dak Prescott in case of injury to either of their starting tackles, the Cowboys might have to start making phone calls to see who else is out there that might be able to help them fix their problem at the swing tackle position.
