Martin Keown has claimed that Manchester United could go through the Premier League season unbeaten but miss out on the title to Manchester City.
Manchester United have won six of their opening eight games but the 20-time English champions dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Stoke City and a goalless stalemate at Liverpool.
Jose Mourinho was heavily criticised for his conservative approach to their trip to Anfield despite Manchester United scoring 21 times in their opening seven games.
Manchester City, on the other hand, were 7-2 winners against Stoke City at the Etihad Stadium to take their tally to 24 goals in their last five games.
Former Arsenal defender Keown was part of Arsene Wenger’s famous Invincibles squad in 2003-04 as the Gunners won the title without losing a game.
And the retired England defender believes Manchester United could get through the season unbeaten but miss out on the title due to Manchester City’s impressive form.
“I could see United going unbeaten but not winning the league,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“If Jose Mourinho wants to win the Premier League, he may have to change his approach.
“Anfield was a missed opportunity. Nobody can dispute how hard United are to beat this season but Mourinho seemed unwilling to risk defeat by Liverpool.
“The most important thing is winning the title and to do that, sometimes you have to take risks even if it means surrendering an unbeaten record.”
Manchester United won the League Cup and the Europa League in their first season under Mourinho.
