Berlocq has praised his protégé for his powerful and precise forehand, versatile backhand, and impressive serve, as well as his commitment to the sport.

Under Berlocq’s tutelage, Etcheverry has had a successful 2023 season so far. In the Santiago tournament, he reached the finals against Nicolás Jarry, narrowly losing 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-2. Carlos Alberto Berlocq, born February 3, 1983, is an Argentine retired professional tennis player who went by the nicknames Charly, Panther, and Warlocq. With a preference for playing on clay courts, Berlocq was coached by Walter Grinovero during his own career.

Before his work with Carlos Berlocq, Etcheverry’s foundational skills were honed by Gustavo Merbilhaa, who began coaching him at the age of seven. Merbilhaa was immediately impressed by the young Etcheverry’s ability to consistently land his shots even without proper technique. Despite only training for one hour twice a week, Etcheverry’s dedication to the sport was evident. As Merbilhaa recalled, “He was capable of sacrificing a victory in order to do what he had to do and improve.”

Merbilhaa also helped Etcheverry address issues with anxiety and pressure that plagued him during his early years. With the support of a sports psychologist and a psychiatrist, Etcheverry was able to overcome these challenges and develop a strong mental game that has greatly contributed to his success on the court.
