Toledo (0-0) vs. VMI (0-0) Game Preview
Toledo has some work to do, but the defending MAC champ is still good enough to win the league title again. It all starts with what should be a light and breezy tune-up against a VMI team that went 0-11 last season and needs to suddenly find an offense.
The Keydets have experienced parts returning to the 123rd-ranked offense in the FCS, but the defensive has work to do after losing six starters.
Meanwhile, with Miami coming to the Glass Bowl two weeks after, Toledo is truly tuning up before the season really begins.
One Reason Why VMI Will Win
The Toledo defensive front might take a little bit to come together.
It should be fine in time, but the Rockets lost just enough to be a concern over the first part of the season. They didn’t generate a whole slew of sacks, and the run defense was hardly anything special.
No, VMI’s O line isn’t going to be amazing, but three starters return and it should be a relative strength for the team early on.
The team’s biggest positive? The Keydets won’t kill themselves with penalties. They committed the fewest in the FCS (38), while Toledo was 123rd in the FBS committing 106.
One Reason Why Toledo Will Win
Toledo averaged 418 yards per game last season. VMI averaged 219.
It’s a new year and a new team, but against a Keydet defense that loses all four linebackers and its top defensive back – safety Greg Sanders – the Rocket offense should go off.
There might be a new starting quarterback, but the receiving corps will be unstoppable. This is a balanced attack that should do whatever it wants to, but there’s no chance VMI will be able to handle the big, tough targets. The Rockets should be able to move the ball however they want to.

What’s Going To Happen
Toledo will be able to call its shot.
VMI will be better, and it’ll be able to come up with a few wins this season after last year’s disaster, but it’s going to be a tough opener.
This is where the Rockets get all the pieces some live action. Quarterbacks Mitchell Guadagni and Eli Peters will both see plenty of time for a passing game that will put this away in the first quarter.
