How To Fix Windows 10 File Explorer won’t Open, Not Responding or Crashes

Many users have already switched to Windows 10, This windows 10 is the best windows ever with lots improvements with new features And users friendly. But some times After install recent updates users face The File Explorer not working, it’s just stop responding and keep crashing every time you try to create a new folder, Explorer hangs when user right clicks some thing or save a file. Also some users Experience after switch to windows 10 From Windows 8.1 or 7 The file Explorer not open after several clicks.

File Explorer is used to be Windows Explorer in previous Windows version. Windows 10 File explorer seems to have a lot of bugs. users complaining about the same thing, it is not working, keep crashing, can not create a new folder. Even it freeze the computer and you have to hard-to shut down the computer by pushing the physical power button.

Disable Quick Access in File Explorer

Quick Access is used to be Favorites in the previous Windows version. Quick Access contains your recently used files and folders. Quick access is opened by default every time you launch File Explorer. When there is too many recent files and folders of yours, it might slowing down or even freeze the File Explorer, some times disable the Quick Access to This Pc may fix this problem

To disable Quick Access, you have to change the Folder Options. Go to start menu and type Folder Options into Start menu Search. Select the first one at the top of the search result. In the General tab, go to Open File Explorer to, and select This PC from the combo box.


Now apply changer and click ok to save changer now when you next time open file explorer . It will show This PC section instead of Quick Access.

Restart in task manager

some times Due to corrupt program or virus effect the file Explorer goes to Not Responding mode, and some users Reported Restarting the Explorer can fix your issue or didn't freeze while Troubleshooting for future Error. To Do this Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to start Task Manager. Then locate Windows Explorer.



Right click Windows Explorer and choose End task. On top of the Task Manager window, click File option and choose Run new task. Type explorer.exe in the box and then hit Enter.


 This will Start the Explorer, Now check Hope This will fix your problem.

Clear history cache and create new path

 Right click the File Explorer icon on the task bar, then choose Unpin from taskbar. Press Windows key and X key at the same time, then select File Explorer from the list Right click the Quick Access link and select Options.



Here on Folder options Under General tab, choose Clear under Privacy category. This will help you clear the File Explorer history.


Right click on the blank spot on the desktop and choose New > Shortcut. Then type in the following address: C:\Windows\explorer.exe and click Next. Rename the file to File Explorer and click Finish. Right click the newly created shot cut and choose Pin to task bar. This should help you fix the problem.

Check for the Virus and Malware 

Some times Due to virus or malware infection system get corrupt and go to not Responding mode, So make sure your system is Virus / Malware free, To check this install a good antivirus or anti malware with latest updates installed.

Download latest Antivirus 

Now perform A full system Scan. After scanning process complete Simply Restart the windows and check Windows working smoothly. Also Run Third party system Optimizer Tool like Ccleaner to clear system junk files, and clear Corrupt Registry files.

Run the System File Checker (SFC)

System File Check is an command prompt syntax to check for the system file corruption, it scans the integrity of all protected operating system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions where possible. Since SFC scans the protected operating system files, you will need an administrator rights to perform this command. Click on Start menu and type CMD  and right-click on it and click Run as administrator.



This Will open command prompt with administrative previlage. Now  Type  command
“Sfc /scannow” and enter to run. This will start  Scan your windows for errors.



Sfc /scannow will inspect all of the important Windows files on your computer, including Windows DLL files. If System File Checker finds an issue with any of these protected files, it will replace it.
wait untill complete the scanning process after complete 100% Restart your system.

If SFC command cannot fix all the problems, you will see this message: “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them.” When SFC can’t handle this, then you have to run DISM. Open the command prompt and run it as Administrator just like before, then run this commands one by one.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth 

DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth




This commands will check whether the image has been flagged as corrupted and then it will repair the errors automatically. This operation generally takes 15-30 minutes depending on the corruption and size of the partition. After the DISM is finished, run sfc /scannow again to make sure the errors are fixed. Now after that Restart the windows. hope This problem will get solved.

Uninstall KB3081449 and KB3081448 updates

Several users reported that update KB3081449 was the cause of the issue, Try with uninstall this update and check problem solve or not. so let’s see how to delete it.
 open control panel view by small icons here open programs and Features. Here select View installed updates. now find KB3081449 and uninstall it. If this doesn’t help, find update KB3081448 and uninstall it as well.
