Best Boutique Hotels in Tallinn’s Old Town

Tallinn is a beautiful city in Northern Europe. Situated in the Baltics, by the Baltic Sea, it offers a mixture of old and new in a compact-sized city – there are a lot of new office buildings in the central business district, and right next to it, an Old Town full of pubs, cafes and shops. In addition, what makes Tallinn a popular tourist destination is its low prices compared to Western European or American cities. Indeed, due to beautiful surroundings and tolerable prices, many people prefer to stay in the Old Town. In this article, I introduce you to the best boutique hotels in the Old Town of Tallinn.

1. Hotel Old Town Maestro’s

The Old Town Maestro’s is one of the better rated hotels in Tallinn. It is situated in an old building dating from 15th century. They offer a buffet-style breakfast every day. There is also a bar open around the clock in this property. It’s located next to the town square, so we are talking the very heart of Tallinn here!

What people liked?

Location is good – Not a surprise, but people liked the location. Tallinn’s Old Town is full of narrow streets, but navigating through them is not a problem when your hotel is so close.

Clean – Many were the reviews that pointed out this hotel premises – both public and rooms – are clean.

Quiet – Despite being in the Old Town where most of the nightlife is located, the guests were still enjoying a good night’s sleep without disturbances.

What people didn’t like?

Breakfast – There were many comments about the limited selection on breakfast. If more choices were served it would be better, indeed.

2. Savoy Boutique by TallinnHotels

Another hotel on the famous Suur-Karja street in the Old Town, the Savoy Boutique offers rooms with Art Deco decoration, minibar and free Wireless Internet. There is an in-house restaurant called MEKK for both local and international dishes. They offer a shuttle service from/to airport for a little additional fee, too.

What people liked?

Location – Every hotel of Old Town has a good location in my books. But especially this street, the Suur-Karja, is full of bars and shops a tourist might find most interesting…

Helpful staff – Having a friendly staff in Estonia (or any ex-Soviet country) is not a norm, but this hotel seemed to have the staff department down!

Excellent breakfast – People really digged the breakfast this property serves.

What people didn’t like?

Weekend nights can be noisy – You are right in the middle of Tallinn which can be a blessing and a curse. Summer weekends can be quite a curse if you are a light sleeper – there will be loud drunken people on the streets until early morning.

3. Parkers Boutique Apartments – Old Town

Parkers isn’t a hotel with reception but an apartment. It is, nonetheless, one of the best rated boutique properties in Tallinn’s Old Town! Parkers has locations around the northern side of Old Town, offering wireless internet, living room, kitchen – everything you could expect from a real apartment. Some of the locations even have panorama views to the town.

What people liked?

Strategic location – The Parkers apartments are situated in the north side of Old Town, very convenient for those who are arriving by ferry (the harbor is rather close).

Host is friendly – The person who looks after these apartments and welcomes guests is friendly and shows the best places around the town, so said many guests.

Relax in sauna – At least some addresses have sauna and bathtub for real relaxation.

What people didn’t like?

Might get noisy – This is the disadvantage of staying in Old Town. The buildings are old, have bad sound proofing, and there are a lot of pubs and drunken people at nights.

4. Barons Boutique Hotel Tallinn

Right in the middle of Tallinn’s Old Town, this boutique hotel offers all the modern amenities: free Wireless Internet, minibar and safety deposit box. It has a 24-hour front desk, ensuring there will be somebody in the reception even at night. The hotel also has a jugend-style bar and a restaurant.

What people liked?

Central location – The Barons, like many other boutique hotels of Tallinn’s Old Town, is located on the Suur-Karja street. Major by the Old Town standards, this street offers a lot of shopping, dining and drinking options for tourists and locals alike.

Great beds – Many guests pointed out they could sleep well in this hotel. Beds were comfortable and soft.

Amenities – Some of the rooms are very spacious and have a bathtub.

What people didn’t like?

Party outside – Even though the beds are comfy to sleep in, it might be disturbing to hear all the party noises from outside. The rooms have free earplugs, that must be said.

Breakfast could be better – The breakfast selection was limited and could have had more variety.

5. The Three Sisters Boutique Hotel

I think The Three Sisters is the best rated boutique hotel in Tallinn’s Old Town at the moment. The building is from the 14th century and rooms have unique decoration with wooden floors. The restaurant offers Estonian gourmet food from its fusion kitchen. Granted, also breakfast buffet and hotel bar are available.

What people liked?

Near harbor – It is located at the northern edge of Old Town, close to the harbor. People arriving by boat (mostly Finns, Swedes and Russians) will have rather short walk to this hotel.

Unique rooms – Guests said the rooms of this hotel all look different, and the old building is very idyllic.

Quiet – One of the perks of staying off the Old Town center is the quietness. There should be no noise coming from bars or drunken people to this hotel!

What people didn’t like?

Room might get cold in winter – Yep, if you come here in the winter time, the room might be chilly. That is the downside of these old and beautiful but poorly insulated buildings.

6. St Petersbourg Hotel

Located on one of the busiest streets of Old Town, the St Petersbourg Hotel is also the oldest hotel of Tallinn. The building was built some 600 years ago, yet the property offers modern amenities such as wireless Internet, stylish interiors and room fridges. There is a proper in-house restaurant and bar as well.

What people liked?

Close to everything – This boutique hotel is naturally close to all Old Town sights and amusements. But it’s also near the Tallinn Railway Station if you are taking train to elsewhere in Estonia.

Helpful staff – People working for this hotel had a smile on their face which is not a norm in Estonia (or any Baltic country to that matter).

Rooms – The rooms are spacious, even luxurious, said many of the guests.

Hotel restaurant – The à la carte food this restaurant offers is excellent yet not too expensive.

What people didn’t like?

Breakfast – Breakfast is not on par with the great lunch & dinner the hotel restaurant offers.

No lift – Despite being a fancy hotel it does not offer an elevator. It might be problem for the elderly.

7. Hotel Telegraaf

Hotel Telegraaf is a real 5-star luxury hotel situated a stone’s throw away from the Town Square of Tallinn’s Old Town. It offers a full range of amenities, such as pool and different kinds of spas. There is also a regular sauna and steam sauna for guests. All rooms have air conditioning and the hotel restaurant cooks Russian and French foods. Also on the hotel premises is a bar for wines, cocktails and more.

What people liked?

Luxurious – Everything about the hotel looks and feels luxurious. The decoration is fantastic, rooms are clean and comfortable.

Quiet rooms – Even though it’s right in the middle of Old town, this boutique hotel is quiet! I bet it’s because the rooms have some kind of solid sound-proofing – the surrounding areas surely have bars with drunken people at nights.

Spas – People seemed to like the spa department a lot.

What people didn’t like?

Problems at breakfast – Few guests left comments that some foods at breakfast were out from time to time. Also, it took time to get waiter’s attention.
