It’s Bisexual Awareness Week. Let’s Speak for ourselves!

Bi Visibility Day, also known as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, has been celebrated every year since 1999. This day is a call to recognize and celebrate bisexual history, bisexual community and culture, and all the bisexual people in their lives.

The day, which takes place on 23 September, also marks the start of Bisexual Awareness Week(or simply #BiWeek, for short), which runs until 30 September.

Bisexual Awareness Week is important for both bisexuals and the other people.

It’s a perfect time for bisexuals to recall bisexual history and culture. For others from outside and inside the queer community, there are people asking “Is bisexual a phase only?” The Bi Week is helpful for them to believe that the bisexual really exists.  As a result, there are more and more bisexual choose to come out.

We know that gay and lesbian are facing discrimination from non-queer community. However, the bisexual people face “double discrimination” from both inside and outside of the queer community. Bisexuals are perceived as being less trustworthy for absolutely no good reason.

It’s so wrong. People are having so many prejudice for bisexuals, which are affecting mental health in the bisexual community. A Human Rights Council report found that bisexuals had higher rates of anxiety, depression, and STIs than any other group.

So let’s speak for ourselves at this Bisexual Awareness Week. Let’s take the time to expose the myths around bisexuality and allow people to know about what it really means to be bisexual.
