Overview:

The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) offers an opportunity for highly-qualified individuals from developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to pursue postgraduate studies in fields related to economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related areas at participating academic institutions across Asia and the Pacific. Upon completing their studies, scholars are expected to contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries.

Host Institution(s):

ADB-JSP scholarships are provided exclusively to participating academic institutions.

Fields of Study:

The ADB-JSP covers postgraduate programs in disciplines such as economics, management, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, science and technology, and other fields related to development. Eligible programs must be offered at participating academic institutions in the Asian and Pacific Regions.

Number of Scholarships:

Approximately 300 scholarships are awarded annually.

Target Group:

The scholarships are available to citizens of ADB’s borrowing member countries.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions:

The ADB-JSP offers comprehensive support, including full tuition fees, a monthly allowance for subsistence and housing, a stipend for books and instructional materials, medical insurance, and travel expenses.

The scholarship covers one year initially, with the possibility of an extension to the second year of study based on the scholar’s satisfactory academic performance as determined by the institution. The maximum duration for scholarship awards is two years for both master’s and doctoral programs.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be nationals of ADB borrowing member countries. (Note: Applicants from countries no longer borrowing from ADB are ineligible for the ADB-JSP Scholarship).
  2. They must have been admitted to an approved MA/PhD program at an academic institution.
  3. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with an outstanding academic record.
  4. At the time of application, candidates must have at least two years of full-time professional work experience (acquired after obtaining a university degree). They must also possess strong oral and written English communication skills to facilitate their studies.
  5. Applicants should not be older than 35 years at the time of application, with exceptions for specific programs that cater to senior officials and managers, where the age limit is extended to 45 years.
  6. Candidates must be in good health.
  7. They should commit to returning to their home country upon completion of the program.
  8. The scholarship does not extend to ADB executive directors, alternate directors, management and staff, consultants, and their relatives. Additionally, academic institution staff are not eligible.
  9. Applicants residing or working in a country other than their home country are not eligible.
  10. ADB-JSP does not provide support for applicants already enrolled in graduate degree programs.
  11. The scholarship program does not fund undergraduate studies, distance learning programs, short-term training, conferences, seminars, thesis writing, or research projects.

Application Process:

Prospective scholars must request information and application forms from the chosen academic institution. They should express their intent to apply for admission and be considered for the ADB-JSP Scholarship. Completed institution application forms, along with the required documentation and the ADB-JSP Information Sheet form, should be submitted to the academic institution. No separate application to ADB is required.

Applicants are advised to submit their scholarship applications at least six months before their intended program commencement date, following the regular intake month and application deadline of the participating academic institutions.
