Parliament Special Session: Women’s Reservation Bill in Rajya Sabha today, Lok Sabha to discuss Chandrayaan-3 success

The special session of the Parliament is on the last leg today. The session commenced on September 18 and is scheduled to be concluded on Friday. Beside starting a new chapter in India’s legislative history by starting its business in the new Parliament building, majority of the attention was drawn towards the women’s reservation bill that was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The historic Bill termed as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will be tabled in Rajya Sabha for passage for the remainder of the session. According to the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, the historic bill might require approval from half of the state assemblies. Following the passage in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to all MPs across the party lines who voted in support of this bill.

According to reports, in the Lok Sabha, the bill received 454 votes in favour as opposed to two votes against the bill. On the other hand, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which is known for siding with BJP in the Centre, has issued a three line Whip to its Rajya Sabha MPs to present in the House today and support the passage of the bill.

Despite Opposition’s contention over the implementation of Women’s Reservation Bill and demand for extending similar benefits to other backward classes (OBC), the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was passed with overwhelming majority votes in Lok Sabha. The Bill proposes one-third, that is 33% reservation, for women representatives in both Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Reportedly, the reservation will continue to be in place for 15 years from the day of its implementation, with provision for the Parliament to extend the duration if necessary.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Lok Sabha will hold discussion on the success of Chandrayaan 3 mission. Before adjourning the House for the day, Speaker Om Birla informed the members that Lok Sabha will take the discussion on the success of the latest moon mission and India’s glorious space journey.
