This year, Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is being celebrated on January 9. The auspicious occasion also known as Prakash Parv is being observed every year by the Sikh community across the world. The tenth and the last Sikh Guru was born on December 22, 1666, in Patna, Bihar.

Born to Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh guru, and Mata Guruji, Guru Gobind Singh became the protector and the leader of the Sikhs after his father was killed by Aurangzeb. He led the Sikh Community at the age of 9.

Guru Gobind Singh was known for forming the Sikh community Khalsa in 1699. He further established the Five Ks, Kangha (a wooden comb), Kesh (uncut hair), Kirpan (a sword), Kacchera (short breeches), Kara (iron or steel bracelet) which are the most important things in Sikhism.

Devotees flock to gurudwaras to seek Guru Gobind Singh’s blessings on his birth anniversary. On this day, devotees also distribute clothes and food to the needy.
