Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit on Sunday night clarified his statement on Mahatma Gandhi and Bollywood actress Rakhi Sawant.

He had said Sawant would have become even greater than Mahatma Gandhi if one could become great just by wearing less clothes. After being criticized for this statement, Dixit clarified his comments on social media.

Tweeting in Hindi, Dixit said his remarks were twisted out of context. The remarks were made at ‘prabuddh varg sammelan’ (meeting of intellectuals) organised by the BJP in the Bangarmau assembly constituency.

After the video of this speech went viral on social media, Dixit clarified by tweeting late on Sunday night. In a series of tweets, he said some friends on social media are circulating a video excerpt of my speech with a hint of meaning otherwise.  In fact, this is a part of my speech in Unnao’s enlightened conference, in which the conference operator introduced me and described me as an enlightened writer. I further said on this point that by writing some books and articles one does not become enlightened, Mahatma Gandhi used to wear less clothes, the country called him Bapu. But this does not mean that Rakhi Sawant will also become Gandhiji.

A statement made by UP Assembly Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit in the BJP’s enlightened class conference organized in Unnao’s Bangarmau on Saturday has gone viral on social media and creating headlines. In the conference, the Speaker had said that people of many parties are now talking about the construction of the temple by becoming templeists.
