How to make a Mind Calming Glitter Jar

An excellent way to introduce kids to the concept of Mindfulness is to make a Mind Jar with them.

The idea behind a Mindfulness Jar is that the jar represents your mind, and the Glitter your thoughts and feelings.

Our usual mental state can be represented by a shaken jar, with all the glitter floating everywhere.  But, if we become mindful everything becomes clearer, just like putting down the jar and watching all the glitter float to the bottom.

You can find a more detailed explanation about how Mindfulness Jars work at the bottom of this page.

Making your own Mind Jar is very easy (but children will need adult supervision).

All you need is:

  • a clear glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
  • some clear glue or glitter glue
  • some glitter
  • some super glue (to glue the lid on)
  • very hot water

Method:

  1. Pour hot water into your jar. Leave some room at the top, because as you add the glue the water level will rise.
  2. Squirt some glue into your jar. The more glue you add, the slower the glitter will fall to the bottom when you shake the jar.  As a guide, start with squirting in enough glue to cover the bottom of your jar.  You can always add more glue later if you want to.
  3. Stir until the glue is completely dissolved. The hotter the water, the easier this is.
  4. Pour in the size, amount and colour of glitter you want.
  5. Put the lid on, have a quick shake and decide if you are happy with the way it looks.
  6. When you are satisfied with the way your Mindfulness Jar looks, dry the mouth of the jar, put a few drops of superglue on the threads, then screw the lid on tightly.
  7. Wait for the glue to dry.
  8. Shake, watch and breathe!

Why not send me a picture of your mind jars when they are finished, like this one
