I often get asked about alkaline supplements, green powders as well as how to alkalize fast. The purpose of this post is to give you some really simple recommendations and warn you against some common “healthy supplement” scams. OK, so maybe you heard that you can magically lose weight with the latest green powder mix? Or that you can use some mysterious green herb from the other side of the planet and it will solve all your problems? Well, first of all, the most important thing is to focus on is your nutrition. No amount of supplements will help if you miss this step. Enrich your diet with plenty of vegetables and wholesome foods and avoid processed crap, sodas, excess caffeine, dairy, and alcohol. Even though there is so much conflicting information when it comes to healthy diets, there are two things that always remain the same and most experts agree on: eat more vegetables and eliminate fast food as well as foods that contain chemicals and preservatives. I think this is really common-sense…

 

The Truth about Green Powders and Alkaline Supplements

Personally, I don’t use that many supplements or green powders. But if I do, I usually go for alfalfa (it’s great for your nails, skin and hair and full of minerals-I will be writing more about it soon) as well as barley grass which is our today’s guest. Also, when I say “supplement” I don’t refer to any chemical weight loss pills, pseudo-herbal laxatives for easy detox, artificial protein, or who knows what. I refer to natural superfoods and grasses available as powders. It’s a fantastic solution for busy people- not everyone has got the time to juice grasses, right?

 

Talking about the adjective “alkaline”, it’s got nothing to do with the pH of these powders in their natural state. Nothing at all. It simply means that they are packed with nutrients like vitamins and minerals, free of chemicals, caffeine and sugar. The optimal nutrition that they offer, helps the body stimulate its natural healing processes and maintain then optimal pH of the blood (7.35) almost effortlessly. Why? Again, because of their high nutritional profile.

 

Whenever purchasing a new supplement, be sure to investigate the brand first. I always say, not everything that is marketed as “green” or even “alkaline” is actually healthy and natural. Words like: green, alkaline and life-changing are also catchy marketing lines.

 

Or in other words: not all green glitters…

One more thing- those green powders are not meant to magically raise your blood’s pH. It cannot be higher than 7.35 and our body always does the best it can to self-regulate the blood’s pH for us.

 

However, if we eat a healthy, balanced, clean diet we help the body “optimize” this natural healing function. On the other hand, if we constantly eat processed foods, fast food, drink alcohol, sodas etc. we torture our body with an incredible stress. And yes, it will keep working hard for us, self-regulating the blood’s pH, but sooner or later it will start manifesting disease. Imagine you sit all day in a cold bath saying: but my body can self-regulate its temperature, right?

 

Yea, it can, but sooner or later, it will give up. I prefer to stay on the safe side.

 

I also wanted to mention, that eating alkaline foods (for example vegetables or leafy greens) or taking supplements like green powders (for example barley grass), has got nothing to do with changing your stomach acid. Alkaline foods (including powdered foods, that is-supplements) have an alkaline-forming effect in the body once metabolized. It’s got nothing to do with the pH they have in their natural state or altering your stomach acid.

 

As I have already mentioned, alkaline foods and drinks, are full of nutrients that help your body function at its best. I bet your parents told you to eat more veggies, right?

 

Now, with this mini rant out of the way, let’s focus on barley grass.

 

We all know about benefits of juicing and making smoothies. Real game changer. But what to do when we don’t have time, or maybe want a quick alkaline drink at work, or need something to take with us when traveling?

 

My number 1 recommendation is: BARLEY GRASS.

It actually has a really nice taste! Yes, I actually like its taste. Kind of reminds me of cocoa powder (but green, lol). I am getting addicted to it! (maybe it’s only me? Maybe my taste buds are changing? Please try some barley grass and let me know- maybe I am going mad?).

 

Health Benefits of Barley Grass:

  • It contains loads of vital substances.
  • It is a natural rich source of nutrients and phytonutrients and one of the most effective means to maintain a healthy blood pH
  • It is rich in fiber, potassium, folic acid, calcium, and VIT. B1 and B5. Add to it chlorophyll and carotenoids. It’s an amazing mix for wellness, beauty, energy and health.

 

How to Use Barley Grass?

-Add about 2 teaspoons of raw, organic barley grass powder to 1 cup (0.25 liter) of your drink (water, almond milk, coconut milk, juice or smoothie). I also like to add it to my salads.

 

My favorite way is to mix 2 teaspoons of Barley Grass with 1 cup of almond milk or coconut milk. Add some cinnamon + ginger + some lemon juice and you have a body and mind nourishing drink. I don’t like to mix it with water, but it could be an option too.

 

You can do it at work, or even when traveling. It only takes a few seconds.

 

Craving something sweet?

The above mentioned recipe (barley grass with warm almond milk and some spices) will easily help you fight sugar cravings. You can add stevia for natural guilt-free sweetness.

 

You can also try this amazing banana-papaya smoothie.

This is my boyfriend’s favorite, since he doesn’t like lemons in smoothies:

  • 1 cup coconut milk or similar (chia seed milk is my latest discovery)
  • 1 banana
  • A few papaya slices
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 2 teaspoons barley grass

 

Of course, it is important to choose a quality brand. We want certified organic, gluten-free, chemical-free, non-GMO, No Fillers/Sweeteners etc.

The good thing about barley grass is that compared to other “green powders” and super foods, it’s relatively inexpensive. Personally, I like brands like: Synergy Organics (great choice if you reside in the US as you can get it from Amazon.com), or Purasana (great choice if you reside in Europe, you can order online or even find it in some wellness and health stores).
