When Affirmations Don’t Work (and the Leaky Mind Syndrome)

I am a curious soul. When I get interested in something, I dive all in. This is exactly what I did with Affirmations. I was just curious why they do work for some people, while some people can’t really benefit from them. What I discovered is something that I like to call the “Leaky Mind Syndrome“.

This Will Help You Tweak Your Affirmations

Ready to use affirmations to transform your health and life? They can be very powerful when done right.

Personally, I had partial success with, what I like to call, the traditional way of doing affirmations.

When I say “partial” success I mean that some of my affirmations worked very well for me, while others didn’t do anything, or even made whatever I was trying to improve, worse.

For example, I did very well with some of my health affirmations such as “I am full of energy and vibrant health”.

I have been using this one for years, and it really drives me to take positive action, eat healthily, and take care of my wellbeing. I feel like it really fires up something within me, and then there is this invisible force that pushes me to take actions aligned with my affirmation (most of the time; for me, it’s all about steady progress rather than perfection, I am a recovering perfectionist for that matter!)

But, when I decided to create affirmations to solve a problem, that I think was affecting my health, fitness, life, and business, even my spirituality, namely – I could not get back to getting up early and it was so frustrating…

Well, it didn’t work. Well, it used to work at some point in my life.

But, when I turned 36 it stopped working… And I have been suffering in silence because of that.

I lost my ability to wake up early, something I was so proud of!

For some people, this may not seem like a big deal. Oh, you work for yourself, this is so cool.

No, it’s not. If you can’t stick to your own system of productivity, health and work schedule, not only can you LOSE your freedom, but also your power…

If you can’t keep your own boundaries and stick to your promises. it will affect your relationship with yourself and other people.

You will feel drained!

And it was happening to me. I stopped posting regular content on Holistic Wellness Project blog, and I was even losing my creativity. My mind, body. and soul are used to writing early in the morning…

And there I was, sleeping in, and then feeling stressed out. because of not keeping my promise! Missing on my morning ritual…

Missing on my self-care and many other things I “preach” through my work…

So here’s what worked in the end…

Affirmations When You Are Out of Alignment (“Accept-First-Ation”!)

If you want to use affirmations to address a painful issue, an issue that connects you to tour emotional pain, something you know you really want to change, the traditional way of affirming may not work.

You need to detox your mind and soul first!

LET GO of mental, emotional, and spiritual toxins…

For example, twice a year I go on an alkaline cleanse, for a week or two.

Regular cleanses allow me to get rid of toxins, made my mind stronger and help my body absorb nutrients in a much more efficient and powerful way…

So, I had to do the same with my mind. Instead of mindlessly affirming “I get up at 5 every day feeling amazing” (while my subconscious mind, for some reason, was going like “No, you are NOT!”), I needed something more powerful.

I came across a small kindle Book on EFT ((Emotional Freedom Technique) EFT Tapping for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by Kelly Ashley)…

I wasn’t even looking for EFT or anything. I heard about it before, but I never felt inspired to actually study it.

Sometime in 2019, I came across Kelly’s blog, as I was googling the spiritual awakening symptoms. I joined her mailing list, and I ended up buying one of her online courses on grounding, which I really enjoyed.

So then, I was googling her, to see what else she was offering and I came across her EFT book, got it and read it in one sitting.

And then it got me! EFT made me realize – FIRST ACCEPT, THEN AFFIRM!

Accept Before You Affirm

After reading Ashley’s book, I got hooked on EFT.

That led me to buy another book on EFT- The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner.

I began practicing as I was reading both books. I would read a few pages and then immediately practiced what I learned. It felt so wonderful!

Now, I am not an expert in EFT (although who knows, I might become one, at some point, because it really spared my interest lol!, and this is not a detailed post about EFT. Get the recommended books if you feel like diving deeper.

EFT is amazing and so deeply healing!

But back to the main topic…

My purpose in life and everything I do is to help people think for themselves, instead of blindly following the crowd. I know, my purpose does not sound very sexy, oh well!

So, when it comes to the world of natural, holistic therapies…you can combine different modalities into your own healing system that works for you.

This is what I did thanks to the EFT…

It inspired me to change my affirmations. I took a piece of paper and began writing down my pain points and accepting them.

Even though I can’t get up at 5 AM, I still deeply love and accept myself.

Even though I feel like I am losing my creativity, I still deeply love and accept myself.

Even though I skipped my morning ritual, I still deeply love and accept myself.

I had to admit negativity and let it go…Simple as that!

Do you get this structure?

First, accept and give yourself some space and emotional freedom.

Then, slowly, open yourself to new levels of power!

Now, that I no longer beat myself up, I can be up early again!

I can make those small changes and keep getting up earlier and earlier!

BOOM! It works…

So, to sum up, the traditional way of doing affirmations can work in many cases.

But sometimes, something deeper may be going on. In my case, there is always something deeper going on LOL. I guess it’s my karma, haha, but it’s all good. I discover all those things, I do them myself and then I can share what works with you.

If deep inside you feel angry, resentful, sad or disappointed (like I was feeling because I stopped waking up early and was beating myself up), the traditional way of affirming may not work out for you.

Either way, be open to experimentation, track your progress/ results and don’t be afraid to admit something didn’t work for you.

Everyone is different! At the end of the day, it’s about mindfully exploring and applying what works for you. What’s the point of blindly affirming something that, deep inside, does not feel good for you?

Now, it’s your turn!

Are you going to use my Accept Before You Affirm method to get closer to your (not only) health goals?

Do you need any help?

LOVE,

Marta

PS. Here are the 2 EFT books I have mentioned in this post. Both are available on Amazon. Highly recommended! If you follow what the books say, you may even start healing before you have finished reading them.

The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner

EFT Tapping for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by Kelly Ashley

This EFT thing really got me hooked. Who knows, I might do a certified EFT this year.

I feel like this could be an amazing tool I could use to serve you guys on a higher level
