The Risks You Take When Buying Teeth Whitening Kits Online

Teeth whitening is a huge international industry – and not without reason. A smile says a lot about a person, and millions of people are so unhappy with the color of their Teeth that they’re afraid to smile in public, leading to self-consciousness and confidence issues. What can be done?

Dental surgeons offer a variety of whitening treatments to gently lighten the shade of your teeth, from standard bleaching to laser whitening or even fitting veneers, but these highly effective solutions can nonetheless seem expensive compared to other options.

There are also many products available over the counter which promise to provide you with a better smile, but their usefulness tends to be limited – if the products were strong enough to really make a difference, there would be restrictions on their sale for safety reasons.

That leaves another category of product which promises pearly white teeth, and that’s the home whitening kit sold online. But purchasing one of these kits is a serious risk to take in more ways than one, and here’s why.

Unknown Source

When you buy a product online, do you really know who’s selling it to you? If you’re not shopping at one of the major sites such as Amazon, or at a trusted site you’ve used before, then you could be taking more of a risk than you think. This is especially true in a business such as teeth whitening, which can attract unscrupulous sellers more interested in making a fast buck than providing a quality product.

Unknown Strength

Whitening kits usually work (if they work at all, that is) using bleach or another chemical to remove stains from your teeth. When you’re treated by a dentist, the strength and amount of these chemicals are strictly controlled to ensure they cause no damage or side effects. With a product bought online, especially from an overseas manufacturer, you have no such guarantees. The kit might be too weak to work, or it might be so strong that it causes lasting damage – you simply won’t know until you risk using it.

No Quality Control

This variation in strength can be an ongoing problem. Many kits require repeat treatment to reach and keep the desired results, but even if you find a kit you’re happy with the first time, how do you know you’ll be getting the same product next time around? Especially with cheaper, unbranded kits, you may receive a completely different product each time you order.

No Comeback

If you’re unhappy with the kit, then you may struggle to find a way of complaining or making contact with a fly-by-night trader. If the kit simply doesn’t work, then you’ve wasted your time and money. If, however, using the kit causes lasting dental damage then you’ll probably have no recourse – and worse, your dental insurance probably won’t cover the cost of remedial treatment.

Conclusion

If you’re one of the millions of people who’d love a whiter smile, then by all means, use a mouthwash, toothpaste, or similar product, but don’t expect astounding results. If you want effective treatment and are prepared to pay a sensible amount for it, then speak to your dentist to explore your options. However, using an unknown product bought online represents a risk too far.
