Can Warm Water remove Wax from Food?

Warm water can be effective in removing wax from certain foods, such as fruits that may have a wax coating. Many fruits and vegetables, especially those with smooth, shiny skins like apples, cucumbers, and bell peppers, are often coated with a thin layer of wax. This we are told is done to ‘prevent’ moisture loss and bruising during transportation.

To Remove the wax from these fruits and vegetables, you can follow these steps:

  1. Rinse: Start by rinsing the produce under warm running water. Use a gentle scrub brush or your hands to help remove the wax.
  2. Warm Water Soak: Fill a bowl or basin with warm water (not hot) and submerge the produce in it for a few minutes. The warm water will soften the wax, making it easier to remove.
  3. Scrub: After soaking, gently scrub the surface of the produce with a clean brush or your fingers to remove any remaining wax.
  4. Rinse Again: Rinse the produce once more under running water to remove any loosened wax particles.
  5. Pat Dry: Pat the produce dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.

This process can help remove much of the wax coating from the surface of the food. However, keep in mind that some wax may remain, especially in the crevices of fruits and vegetables.

If you are concerned about wax on your Produce, you can also opt for organic or unwaxed varieties.
