Breast Cancer and diabetes

In the summer of 2012, between high school and university, I went for some months to California for a Lions Youth Exchange and to volunteer as camp counselor at Diabetic Youth Families (DYF) in the national Sequoia Park in California. Two amazing experiences which both shaped. At DYF I met Nina Wread. She supported the medical team. She is also living with type 1 diabetes and got diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier this year. Her story of breast cancer and diabetes illustrates the problem with healthcare insurance.

The moment I read Nina’s message on Facebook stating that she had breast cancer I was shocked. Nina is young, takes care of her body and is the warmest person you can imagine. It hurts. Nina, and nobody, deserves this. But diseases don’t discriminate. In any sense.

The combo of type 1 diabetes and breast cancer makes Nina’s case complicated. For that reason she must undergo treatment far from home. An extra cost on the already higher bills.

When facing diseases social support is necessary to maintain good spirits and helps greatly in reducing stress. Due to the higher costs of cancer treatment Nina has a difficult time providing for herself. An amazing friend of her set up a fundraising page so she can celebrate the holiday season at home.

Please, when you have the possibility, help Nina by funding this campaign.
Everybody deserves a warm home during the holiday season.
