Watch the latest Hyundai Exter Review!

Hyundai has recently launched its micro crossover known as the Exter. The Korean carmaker has priced the Exter in the price range of Rs. 5.99 Lakhs to Rs. 9.99 Lakhs Ex-showroom. Below is our opinion and review of Hyundai Exter:

Hyundai Exter: Design and Aesthetics

All-new Hyundai Exter is based on the K1 platform which is also used in the Grand i10 Nios and Aura. However, the design language of Hyundai Exter is different from its other siblings with a boxy and wedge profile. The Exter follows the new Parametric design language.

Upfront, the new Exter gets a parametric grille with jewel inserts between projector headlights and a black strip between H-shaped DRLs. Meanwhile, the front layout has a split headlight design, bumper with skid plates and satin finish Hyundai and Exter emblem.

On the side profile, the new Exter gets a big road presence for its segment. Moreover, the roof rails and cladding accentuate the SUVish profile of this vehicle. The SUV sits on 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, enhancing its aesthetics.

Meanwhile, the rear profile features parametric garnish on C-pillar and H-shaped signature LED taillights resembling the DRLs. The tailgate is flat in shape and it gets satin finish badges and a black parametric strip between the taillights. It also gets a rear defogger, rear wiper, spoiler and rear bumper with reflectors and a wide skid plate.

Hyundai Exter: Interior and Features

Unlike the exterior, the interior layout of the Exter is largely similar to the Grand i10 Nios and Aura. However, the Exter is available in 3 different themes for the interior: Black with blue inserts, black with light sage inserts, and black with silver inserts. These interior themes depend upon the colour options on the exterior profile.

Inside, the new Exter features semi-leatherette upholstery, funky-looking AC vents, and a neatly laid-out dashboard. The overall quality levels of the Exter’s interior are good with impressive plastics quality. Meanwhile, the main highlight consists of the twin-screen layout on the dashboard which consists of advanced infotainment and a digital cluster.

Hyundai has loaded the Exter with a plethora of new features and some of them are first in the segment. The features list of the new Exter is listed below:

  • Electric Sunroof
  • Dashcam with Twin Cameras at Front and Rear
  • Voice Commands for operating various vehicle functions like a sunroof, AC, Infotainment System
  • Advanced Digital Instrument Cluster with 4.2-inch Multi-Information Display
  • 8-inch Infotainment System with BlueLink, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, etc. like Connectivity Features
  • Sounds of Nature
  • Wireless Charging
  • Type-C ports
  • Cruise Control
  • Paddle Shifters for AMT Variant
  • Footwell Lightning with Premium Floor Mats
  • Rear AC Vents
  • Automatic AC
  • Keyless Entry
  • Push Button Start/Stop

Hyundai Exter: Seats, Space, and Practicality

As per the carmaker, the new Hyundai Exter is a sub-compact 5-seater utility vehicle. But this vehicle can accommodate 4 people with utmost comfort. However, the 5th person can be managed but there’s a hump which might hamper its comfort levels. The seats offer a good amount of comfort with good-quality of upholstery and bolstering.

In the first row, the passenger and driver get a good amount of legroom and shoulder room. Meanwhile, at the rear, the legroom for the passengers is fairly good and the thigh support is adequate.

However, the headroom for tall passengers is fair enough. The Hyundai Exter is loaded with utility space and it offers 391 litres of boot space. The level of the loading lip is deep which makes loading and unloading the stuff slightly difficult.

Hyundai Exter: Powertrain, Performance, and Fuel Efficiency

Hyundai is offering a multitude of powertrain options in the new Exter. Below is the table of specifications:

Engine Name and type1.2L Kappa-Series VTVT Petrol1.2L Kappa-Series Bi-fuel VTVT (Petrol+CNG)

19.2 (AMT)

Transmission Options5-Speed Manual Transmission (MT)/
Automated Manual Transmission (AMT)
5-Speed Manual Transmission (MT)

In this review, we drove the 1.2L Petrol Manual and 1.2L Petrol AMT versions. Talking about the performance, the Exter offers a linear yet tremendous surge in outright acceleration. On the low end, the pull of the Exter is just fair enough but the real highlight is the mid-range. Post 2,500 rpm, the Exter picks up its pace well and it offers a good pulling power for get going. However, it is pointless to rev the motor past 5,000 rpm as the engine loses out its pulling potential.

Meanwhile, the Manual counterpart has a smooth clutch and gearbox. The gear shifts in the Manual are quite slick and easy to use with a light clutch. The AMT has an electric actuator which ensures smooth shifting of gears if driven normally. But, once you hit the throttle hard, you will feel the delay in the gear shifts.

Hyundai Exter: Suspension, Ride Quality and Braking

In terms of Suspension setup, the new Hyundai Exter has the following parameters:

Front SuspensionMcPherson Strut
Rear SuspensionCoupled Torsion Beam Axle
Front Brake TypeDisc
Rear Brake TypeDrum
Tyre Size175/65/R15
Type of wheels14-inch Steel(EX, EX(o), S, S(o))
15-inch Styled Steel(SX MT and AMT)
15-inch Diamond-cut alloy(SX Dual Tone, SX(o), SX(o) Connect)

Hyundai has well-tuned the suspension of the Exter for suitable road conditions in India. At low speeds, the ride quality is stiff and bumpy somehow. However, as the vehicle picks up the pace, the ride quality becomes better and softer. The undulations are well managed and it offers good stability to 80km/h. Although, the Exter could’ve got slightly wider tyres for enhanced grip and stability. The Exter also offers good performance on softer off-roading conditions due to its 185mm of ground clearance.

Hyundai Exter is equipped with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. With this braking setup, the Exter offers good braking performance and it has good braking bite.

Hyundai Exter: The Conclusion

Overall, the Hyundai Exter offers the best package for an ideal sub-compact SUV buyer. The Exter has a good road presence, SUVish looks, first-in-segment features, and higher ground clearance. Inside, the Exter gets a premium dashboard with all the controls that can be easily accessed by the users. In terms of features, Hyundai has loaded it with features including Dashcam, Sunroof, Advanced Infotainment system, Advanced Digital Cluster, etc.

The performance and fuel efficiency is excellent and it has good power and stability for driving on certain roads. Moreover, the braking performance and ride quality are good due to its suspension setup and 15-inch wheels. If you are looking for a sub-compact SUV which offers a big road presence, higher ground clearance, a fresh new design, new features, and powerful performance with fuel efficiency, then look no further than the new Hyundai Exter.
