Why I’ve decided not to niche

There are a lot of freelance writers out there who swear that it’s vital that you have to have a Niche if you are going to be successful as a copywriter. If you enter the term ‘copywriter’ into Google prefixed by pretty much anything, you are sure to find a writer who niches in whatever it is you’re looking for.

The theory is that by narrowing down the types of Writing you do (in other words, specialise), you become somewhat of an expert in that subject, and people looking for writers who are experienced in writing in their industry can feel assured that they are getting someone who knows what they need, and can write well about it.

I myself have made efforts to narrow down the subjects I write about – something I wrote about here – and do you know what I found?

No one cared.

I have a list on my website which advises my clients the subjects I want to write about. I have selected the industries I am experienced in writing for, and those I’m interested in writing for. Yet I’ve found that the majority of enquiries I get don’t fit in with those niches at all.

So, what do I do? Reply to those people telling them that they’re not within my niche? Sorry, not interested?

Of course not. That’s pretty silly. I’m not going to turn down a paid job, just because it doesn’t fit in with the niche I’d chosen. That’s not why I wanted to do this job.

I write because I’m interested in the world. The best part of my job isn’t really the writing – it’s the learning. I adore the research part of it. I like finding out about all kinds of different industries and types of writing. It’s like learning new skills and subjects every time I take on a new project. I love the challenge.

And if it’s a subject that I genuinely have no interest in – I can always say no (but I rarely do).
So why should I stop challenging myself, and risk getting bored by just writing about one type of industry? Yawn.

Having a niche might work for you. If it’s something you’re expert in, you might have a select group of client who pay you top dollar to be an expert writer in their field. But it doesn’t work for me. I don’t want it to.

So I’m not going to be known as a niche writer. I’m a copywriter, who writes for small businesses (mainly, not exclusive), and has a passion for learning everything I can about your industry, so that I can write the best that I can, and get you as much visibility as you desire to make more money. Because that’s why I do this.
