Seven Terraces Hotel, Penang

When one gets a child-free weekend in Georgetown and wants to show an old friend the best Malaysia has to offer, one logs onto Tripadvisor and only looks at the top, right? That’s at least how I found myself jestsetting to Georgetown for a quick getaway and ubering my way from the airport to Seven Terraces Hotel.

As I step through the heavy doors into the leafy courtyard, it’s like stepping back in time. The building itself is beautifully restored and adapted to modern day. The rooms are located along long walkways along the building with huge louvered doors in front of the windows.

The rooms are furnished with antiques and the high ceilings give impression of more space. Our room was actually ridiculously spacious with a living area and a TV up on the loft.

This inviting bed was a perfect place to dig into The Gift of Rain – something I gave my friend as a travel read for Penang and she could hardly put down. The hotel is conveniently situated on the edge of the old town making it easy to walk anywhere. When ordering Ubers or Grab cars, tell them which entrance you will them meet them, the hotel spreads across one block with doors on both sides.

We didn’t manage to eat at the famous Kebaya restaurant, also ranked the first in George Town, for it was closed for a private function. But we did enjoy the breakfast, made to order with a cold pressed juice and beautiful coffee. We followed the manager’s recommendations for eating out and were not disappointed.

We thought we would need a pool after walking around in the heat of George Town but ended up not using it. The pool is quite small and situated right by the bar/lounge. It makes for a nice back drop for some cool drinks, of course.

The suites are big enough for families and while I am absolutely sure children are most welcome here – as they are everywhere in Malaysia – I may choose somewhere else to stay with the kids in tow, like the nearby Muntri Mews although it doesn’t have a pool. George Town now has many lovely boutique hotels with character, and the Seven Terraces surely has deserved the top spot. However, at lest whenever I go to George Town very little time is spent in the hotel room!
