How memory foam works

How memory foam works - an introductory guide

The agency’s ingenious researchers created Memory Foam - then known as temper foam - as a way of absorbing shock. Fitted into the seats of NASA spacecraft, the foam ironed out jolts and vibrations to give astronauts a much more comfortable journey.

Like many NASA technologies, it later found a whole new range of uses back on terra firma. Let’s take a look at how it works, why it’s beneficial and how.

What is memory foam made of?

Like many great inventions, Memory foam was inspired by the natural world around us. NASA’s team looked at natural ‘viscoelastic’ materials like dough, body tissue and starch - materials that spring back to their original shape after you touch them - and sought to create a man-made version.

Otherwise known as polyurethane or viscoelastic foam, memory foam’s primary ingredient is polyurethane (plastic). This base material is then showered with various chemical compounds (namely monols and polyols) which, together, increase its density and viscosity.

What are the benefits?

What sets memory foam apart from regular foam is its elasticity. This gives it an inherent ‘springiness,’ allowing it to mould to the user’s exact body shape. It’s this attribute that has made the material so popular amongst mattress and pillow manufacturers.

By fully supporting your whole body, memory foam can alleviate pressure on your joints and muscles, keeping aches and pains at bay.
