Tens of Thousands flee South after Israel Evacuation Orders: UN

GAZA: Tens of thousands of people have fled to South Gaza after Israel issued an evacuation order. This comes after over 400,000 Palestinians were already displaced, according to a UN Humanitarian Office.

Thousands are believed to have fled their homes and moved south following an evacuation warning by Israel. According to a report by the UN Humanitarian Office OCHA, prior to the order, more than 400,000 people had already been subjected to displacement. Israeli forces reportedly issued a warning to approximately 1.1 million people in Gaza to evacuate and move to the south ahead of its expected invasion of the area. Meanwhile, Hamas urged the people to stay in defiance of the Israeli military order.

In the wake of the ongoing loss of innocent lives across Gaza, tens of thousands of protestors have rallied across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and even the US in support of the Palestinian cause and condemned Israel. Meanwhile, per a Reuters report, Israel continues to intensify its strikes on Gaza in retaliation for Hamas’s attack a week ago.

Crowds gathered outside mosques to salute Hamas and chant anti-Israeli slogans, in Türkiye. In the south-eastern city of Diyarbakir, Mikail Bakan a business owner urged Muslims to unite: “All the Muslim world needs to be one against Israel”. Likewise, in Baghdad, Iraqi citizens rallied in central Tahrir Square and chanted anti-US and anti-Israeli slogans while waving Palestinian flags in support. The supporters also burned the Israeli flag on Friday.

In Iran, state-organized rallies were held in support of Hamas. According to Western media, Iran is believed to be the ‘main backer’ of the ‘militant’ group. Similarly, Naim Qassem, Hezbollah deputy chief while addressing a protest in Lebanon said they are “fully ready” to join the fight against Israel.

On the other hand, China’s Special Envoy on the Middle East met with representatives of the Arab League in China, on Friday, for an emergency session to address the Gaza-Israel crisis, as confirmed by a statement from the Chinese Foreign Office on Saturday. According to reports, special envoy Zhai Jun affirmed China’s support for the 22-member Arab League in playing a central role in the Palestinian cause. Zhai Jun also affirmed continued humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people. In a statement issued, Zhai said: “The international community should earnestly enhance its sense of urgency to return to the correct basis of the Two State Solution to realise the peaceful coexistence of the two states of Palestine and Israel”.

Aside from the pro-Palestine protests, Jewish communities in the US, France, and other European states have shown support for Israel. France and Germany went as far as banning pro-Palestine protests citing fears of violence. Likewise, in the UK, police have reportedly been assigned extra patrols to visit schools, mosques, and synagogues over “security fears“.
