1993 blasts: Fate of five convicts on September 7

MUMBAI: The quantum of sentence for the convicts of the 1993 Blasts second trial will be pronounced on September 7, special TADA judge G A Sanap has said. Six persons have been Held Guilty and one was acquitted. One convict has died.

CBI special public prosecutor Deepak Salvi had sought the death sentence for four of them. They have been Held guilty of plotting and causing the serial blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993, that killed 257 and left over 713 injured. Of them, Mustafa Dossa, brother of the prime absconding accused Mohammed Dossa, died pending sentencing. There will be no sentence pronounced against him.

A life term has been sought against Abu Salem, who was held guilty of conspiracy and so could have attracted the maximum punishment – death penalty. But since he was extradited from Portugal in 2005, a Lisbon court has held that he cannot be awarded death here.
