Black-ish: Season 2, Episode 6 Review – Jacked O’ Lantern

Season 2, Episode 6 of Black-ish, Jacked o’ Lantern starts with a little Halloween nostalgia. Andre has always loved Halloween, and, even though he hadn’t had the best costumes, he’d always made sure to make it to the neighbourhoods with the best candy. Now he lives in one of those good candy neighbourhoods! Kids travel from all over to trick-or-treat there ---- including Andre’s nieces and nephews, who come up out of the ‘hood to hang with the Johnsons every year on Halloween. And, again every year, they rough up the Johnson kids and steal their candy, which Andre lets happen because he thinks it’s good for his ‘soft’ kids. This year the Johnson clan is going as the Obama family, plus a secret service guy (Junior) and the dog (Jack). (Ruby, of course, considers it the Devil’s day and isn’t joining them). When Andre brings up the annual cousin beatdown, Rainbow’s against it. Andre tells a listening Junior to pay no attention to her: roughhousing is a normal and necessary part of growing up. Heck, he and his own cousin, June Bug, went at it all the time. Junior points out that ‘June Bug’ sounds pretty stereotypical. No no no, Andre corrects, he’s not a stereotype, he’s just a big aggressive guy from a bad neighbourhood with a stomach tattoo who went to jail a couple of times. Totally not a stereotype! Anyway, Andre continues, it’s what had prepared him for the real world. Without it he wouldn’t be the street-smart, tough, strong, educated gangsta he is today. Halfway through that last sentence, he gets distracted by candy. Super gangsta.
