Purattasi Pooja Procedure & Rituals

On Purattasi Saturday when we are getting ready to make the dishes, we begin by drawing Namum, the two feet symbol of Lord Vishnu’s feet, on the forehead by males, while the women folks do just the red line.

Coming to the dishes prepared for the Neivedyam, Amma used to make 7 different vegetable side dishes along with Mudda Pappu, Green Chili Dal, Rasam, Medu Vada, Saggubiyam Semiya Payasam along with Curds.

All the dishes are prepared in the morning. So the preparation mostly starts early in the day. Typically Amma has the tradition of keeping two banana leaf thaligai and the third leaf has the fried gram powder mixed with jaggery.

Preparing the Thiru Namam

On Purattasi Saturday before beginning the pooja, we draw Thiru Namam, a sigil of Lord Vishnu on our forehead. TiruNamam also called as moodu namalu or Tirumala Namalu in Telugu, represents the two feet symbol of Lord Vishnu’s feet. The Males have one white line drawn with the namakommu in the middle and with three red lines on either side. The women folks have just the red line drawn in the center.
