The Coronavirus Can Be Detected Before Symptoms Appear

The burying of coronavirus victims in Brazil

Tests can identify the causative agents of the Infection a few days before obvious Symptoms. The capabilities of modern test systems for detecting Coronavirus make it possible to determine the presence of infection in the human body even before the first symptoms appear.

But due to a small amount of the virus, the capabilities of such tests are very limited.

“Modern test systems make it possible to reliably identify the causative agent of the disease when symptoms begin to appear."

"A few days before the onset of symptoms, two or three days, it is also possible to detect the disease, but at this time the virus is still small, and therefore the possibilities of molecular diagnostics are limited," according to Professor Mikhail Shchelkanov, head of the laboratory of the ecology of microorganisms at the School of Biomedicine of the Far Eastern Federal University.

Currently, the main symptoms of coronavirus appear within the first two weeks after infection, which is why the established quarantine period is associated.

There are exceptions to the rules, but there are few of them, and in the majority of people, the disease manifests itself 14 days after infection.

Those With COVID-19 Can Be Contagious

Chinese scientists have found that the coronavirus can be contained in sputum and stool samples, even if samples from the nasopharynx show a negative result.

Scientists from the Institute of Infectious Diseases of the Metropolitan Medical University (PRC), as a result of the study, found out that the new type of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 may still be contained in sputum and feces after samples from the nasopharynx already show a negative result.

The study involved 133 people admitted to the Beijing Ditan Hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 between January 20 and February 27.

At the same time, 22 people showed a negative result for coronavirus, taking into account a sample from the nasopharynx, and a positive one based on sputum and feces samples. A real-time polymerase chain reaction was used for the analysis.

Chinese scientists emphasize that it is currently not known for certain whether the data obtained indicate that a patient who has formally recovered from a coronavirus infection is still infectious for others - this will require additional research, but such a possibility exists.
