Cholecalciferol Poison or life saving Different for Rats, Dogs, Cats, and Humans

Since Cholecalciferol ( vitamin D3 ) is used as  a rat poison and can be toxic to dogs and cats, is there a concern over the amount taken?

“Cholecalciferol, or activated vitamin D3, causes a life-threateningly high calcium and phosphorus level in the body, resulting in severe, acute kidney failure. This can progress to chronic kidney failure and have long-term repercussions. Common signs of poisoning may not be evident for 1-2 days, when the poison has already resulted in significant -and potentially permanent – damage to the body. Increased thirst and urination, weakness, lethargy, a decreased appetite, and halitosis (“uremic” breath) may be seen. Acute kidney failure develops 2-3 days after ingestion of this type of mouse and rat poison.

Unfortunately, cholecalciferol mouse and rat poison does not have an antidote, and is one of the most challenging poisoning cases to treat as hospitalization, frequent laboratory monitoring and expensive therapy is often required for a positive outcome ( In mice, rats, dogs, and cats ). Treatment includes aggressive IV fluids (for 2-3 days) and specific drugs (e.g., diuretics, steroids, calcitonin and bisphosphonates) to decrease calcium levels in the body. Frequent monitoring of blood work (calcium, phosphorus, and kidney values) is often needed for a period of 2-6 weeks after ingestion.

Unfortunately, cholecalciferol has a very narrow margin of safety, which means that even small ingestions of this poison can result in severe clinical signs or death. Toxic ingestions must be treated quickly and appropriately to prevent kidney failure.”

A point to this is that rat poison is effective at 2 mg per kg of body weight. Since a dosage of 400 iu vitamin D3 is only 10 mcg ( 0.01 mg ), this or even higher doses for human consumption should not be a concern. To reach this level of concern, a human would need to take 200 * 400 IU per every kg of body weight. that is 80,000 IU per kg of body weight. A 70 kg individual ( 154 pounds ) would have to take close to 2.8 million to 5.6 million IU to be at risk of dying!

An 8 pound infant would likely die from a dosage of 16 mg which is 1,600,000 IU! This is a massive dosage.

The safety of D3 supplementation was borne out the report by all infants in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) received dangerously high doses of Vitamin D every three months in their doctor's office. This dosage was about a quarter of the 'mouse lethal dosage'. The policy was in place for 35 years. The first 600,000 IU dose was given at three months and then every three months until the child was 18 months of age. This works out to an average of 6,000 IU per day (actually, for several technical reasons it is not equivalent) for 18 months. The authors collected blood before the dose and then 2 weeks after the quarterly dose to obtain 25(OH)D, 1,25(OH)D, and calcium levels on a total of 43 infants.

A couple of things that I will note about this. East Germany had one of the lowest levels of infant mortality in the world despite being economically deprived. It was so low that they were accused of manipulation the data and hiding deaths. The second thing that I will point out is the fact that for its size of less than 17 million, East Germany dominated the Olympics during the 1960's, 1970's, and early 1980's when these kids were reaching adulthood. Do you remember what these guys looked like? They were huge, big boned, and strong. East Germany was believe to be pushing steroids? Yes, vitamin D is basically that.

Based on this, a dosage of 5,000 to even 8,000 IU per day ( which is 20 times the RDA ) should not be a serious threat or concerning. This works out to about 35,000 to 40,000 IU per week as being safe for an adult.

As a note, it is critically important to be taking vitamin K2 and Magnesium along with the D3 in order to help properly manage calcium levels in both the blood and in the bone.
