Choosing a Supplement – How to Choose the Right One

The average American adult spends $155 per month on their health and fitness. This is a considerable expense, so when it comes to choosing a Supplement we want to make sure we are making the right choice. So many new supplements appear on the market each year because health trends change every year. Many supplement companies specifically manufacture and market products that are currently trending in the marketplace. Once the trend passes, they discontinue marketing the product and move on to manufacturing and marketing the next trendy supplement. When choosing a supplement that can benefit you, there are several steps you can take to help ensure you are getting an effective product.

If you are thinking about using Dietary supplements:

  • Learn. First research the condition you have and what vitamins, minerals and supplements have been tested to be effective in treating your condition. Next, find out as much as you can about any dietary supplement you might take. Talk with your doctor, your pharmacist, or a registered dietitian. A supplement that seemed to help a friend or neighbor may not be the same one for you. When reading fact sheets or checking websites, look for the source of the information. Read more about choosing reliable health information websites.
  • Research. Make sure you research the company’s history before you buy. How long has the company been in business? How many products do they manufacture? Are there any positive or negative reviews of the company or their products? Are they registered with the Better Business Bureau? Do they follow FDA guidelines? Is the product manufactured and sourced in the USA? In general, reputable supplement companies have a history with their products.
  • Remember. Just because a product is said to be “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe or good for you. It could have side effects. It might make a medicine your doctor prescribed for you either weaker or stronger. It could also be harmful to you if you have certain medical conditions. Find out if the product has any known side effects by looking at the ingredients.
  • Talk to your doctor. When choosing a supplement, again, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Talk to them to see if the supplement is right for you. Your physician shouldo know if you decide to use a dietary supplement. Do not try to diagnose or treat your health condition without first consulting with your doctor. Learn how your medications can interact with dietary supplements. For even more information, visit the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
  • Buy wisely. Choose reputable brands that have a recommendation from a doctor, dietitian, or pharmacist. Don’t buy dietary supplements with ingredients you don’t need. Don’t assume that more is better. It is possible to waste money on unneeded supplements or ingredients.
  • Research the Claims. The FDA does strictly enforce that a supplement company cannot market a product to treat, diagnose, cure, or prevent diseases; however, that doesn’t mean that they cannot make false claims about their effectiveness towards improving health or a general symptom. Make sure when you research the effectiveness of a supplement’s ingredients towards its claims that you use a credible source for information.

  • Check the science. Make sure any claim about a dietary supplement is based on science. The company making the dietary supplement should be able to send you information on the safety and/or effectiveness of the ingredients in a product, which you can then discuss with your doctor. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
