As the saying goes “One man’s Food is another man’s poison,” we know the different foods available around us. Not all are healthy and good for our bodies. People especially yogis are meticulous about what they eat. That is with experienced yogis and great gurus.
The budding yogis and others who occasionally practice Yoga seldom know as what and what not to eat before practising yoga. We have come up with a proper diet to follow before doing Yoga. Foods to avoid eating before a Yoga session is listed below. Read and enlighten yourself.
1. Non-Vegetarian Foods
Meat, all types of fish including eggs are a strict No-No before Yoga. These foods are Rajasic foods. These foods excite the passionate nature of man. In simple words, these are stimulant foods. Some think these foods cause aggressive and dominating thoughts towards others.
2. Processed and Junk Foods
Processed foods, junk foods, artificial foods, artificial sweeteners, and soda should be completely avoided. People including yogis should shun these foods as they have adverse effects on our health. If you want to get the best of your yoga practice, you must withdraw yourself from eating these unhealthy foods. Though these foods are tasty, they will create health complications in the long run. So, precaution is better than cure.
3. Animal Fats and Margarine
Margarine and animal fats contain high cholesterol elements. They produce a high risk of heart attacks among people. It increases LDL in the blood which is harmful cholesterol and decreases the amount of HDL which is beneficial cholesterol.
4. Fried, Stale and Overly Cooked Foods
Consumption of these foods hampers your health. Fried foods and overly cooked foods produce substances which harm your digestion process. The oil containing in those foods, as mentioned earlier, is not good for your heart. They increase the risk of cardiac arrest.
5. Canned Foods
Canned foods are dangerous to your health as they contain chemicals. Various studies have found canned goods contain harmful ingredients. CEH officials say that 40 per cent of canned goods they tested earlier this year contained traceable levels of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA).. It is better to avoid these foods in order to follow a strict yogic diet and before practising yoga.
6. White Flour and White Sugar
Because of high Glycemic Index (GI) of Maida, it spikes up your sugar levels. Eating Maida also raises bad cholesterol (LDL) resulting in many health issues like weight gain, high blood pressure, mood swings. Too much consumption of white flour & its products lead to weight gain and you will soon progress toward obesity.
On the other hand, white sugar also has adverse effects on your health. It has more calories and contains no nutrients. Yogis and experts in yogic diet suggest avoiding consumption of sugar before Yoga sessions.
7. Garlic, Onions and Tamsic Food
Sedative foods or tamasic foods are foods whose consumption, according to Yoga, are harmful to either mind or body. Harm to mind includes anything that will lead to a duller, less refined state of consciousness. Bodily harm includes any foods that will cause detrimental stress to any physical organ directly or indirectly.
