Meditation For Kids: Preparing the Young Minds for Better Tomorrow

Today’s Children are the citizens of tomorrow. There lies a great responsibility on us to mold them for a better future. Meditation helps kids develop focus, and other abilities. However, in this fast pacing and modern world, it is difficult for people to raise kids in an all perfection way. Instead of getting better, the world is worsening day by day. The apprehension of not finding a good place for our children to live in is becoming a reality.

Is it enough to teach interpersonal skills, duties of citizens, the constitution or about relationships? There is much more we, as parents, teachers, guardians have to teach our children. The foremost aspect we have to concentrate on teaching children is to have a good Intrapersonal Relationship with themselves.

Intrapersonal relationship plays an important role in the development of a child. Intrapersonal relationship refers to self-esteem, open-mindedness, being aware of your thinking, the ability to learn, being able to understand and manage your own emotions, self-discipline, self-motivation, being able to overcome boredom, being able to think maturely, being patient and other positive qualities.

What are the ways to instill these qualities in children? We have come up with a dynamic way of making your child a better and a healthier human being in the chaotic world. Do you wonder what is the way? It’s nothing but Meditation. As you read further, we will tell you how meditation plays a key role in your child’s life. Not delaying further, we shall see how to teach meditation to your child!

1. Lead by Example

The first step in teaching meditation to your kids is to lead by example. Every parent who wants to teach his or her child about meditation and mindfulness, he or she has to inculcate the practice in their lives first. Children learn by looking at parents. The actions of parents influence children’s behavior. So, the first thing you need to do as a parent is to start meditating yourself.

2. Adopt to Story-telling Style

Story-telling approach is one of the wonderful ways of connecting with your child. Stories always fascinate us. Stories are the tools for keeping children curious and engaging. You can always tell a story which has a moral at the end. In this way, children can learn moral lessons. Another way of making meditation interesting for children is to use imageries or imagination. In this way, children learn to be creative and thoughtful. There are many books on how to teach meditation to children. Get the aid of these books and make meditation a loving practice to your child.

3. Encourage Sharing Experiences

Ask your child to open up and share his or her experiences. Be friendly with them and make them comfortable talking to you. This helps them share things freely. Ask them to share their experiences both positive and negative. Address their fears, congratulate their joy achievement and happiness. This activity makes them share their emotions with you. As a result of sharing, they become lighter and there is no chance for an emotional outburst.

4. Use a Timer

Designating a particular area in the house for meditation can be a good thing. Do not forget they are children and not adults. Start small. Using timer can be an effective way of tracking time. Initially, a time span of 3-5 minutes is sufficient for children. As they progress in meditation, increase the time. Encourage your child not to worry about the time. Ask him or her to concentrate on a particular thought or a thing.

5. Guidance

Guidance is indispensable for children as they start to meditate. Guide them and teaching them the key aspects of meditation and mindful, helps them to have fruitful time in meditation. As they meditate, notice their breathing and posture. If they are doing it wrong or feeling any difficulty, assist them by giving few demonstrations.
