Hamas attack casts a shadow on Biden’s foreign policy and 2024 ambitions

The recent Hamas attack on Israel has not only put countless lives at risk but also casts a shadow of doubt over President Joe Biden’s Foreign Policy objectives and his promise to restore American leadership on the global stage.

Hamas attack: Jeopardizes Biden’s goals

As the death toll in Israel continues to climb, exceeding 900, including at least 11 Americans, experts are warning that this unexpected assault could jeopardize the Biden administration’s ambitious efforts to broker a groundbreaking agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia to normalize relations.

While it remains too early to definitively ascertain if Hamas, backed by Iran, deliberately aimed to disrupt these delicate negotiations through its attacks, one thing is clear: this situation has further complicated an already challenging diplomatic landscape.

Political implications

The repercussions of the crisis are not confined to the realm of diplomacy; they have significant political implications as well. Robert Lieberman, a political science professor at Johns Hopkins University, noted that President Biden’s narrative of making the world safer by repairing alliances was already a tough sell, especially given recent developments in Afghanistan, Ukraine, and strained relations with China.

“The world remains a perilous place, and its dangers have not visibly diminished compared to the previous administration,” Lieberman opined.

The current confluence of crises in Israel and Ukraine has created an unprecedented challenge for the Biden administration, according to Bremmer. “During the four years of the Trump administration, there was hardly a major foreign policy crisis. Now, we have two simultaneous global crises, each demanding entirely different sets of resources.”

Leadership hanging in the balance

Notably, President Biden’s Republican adversaries have not missed an opportunity to assign blame. They contend that the Biden administration’s recent hostage deal with Iran, which involved unfreezing $6 billion in Iranian assets, freed up funds for Iran to finance the Hamas attack on Israel.

White House officials have categorically dismissed these claims as disinformation, clarifying that none of the released funds have been utilized for hostile purposes and that the restricted funds can only be directed toward humanitarian needs.

As the world watches this crisis unfold, it remains to be seen how President Biden will navigate the complex terrain of foreign policy and electoral politics, with the fate of his leadership and the security of the world hanging in the balance.
