Shooting brakes, the bespoke sports cars converted into the most gentlemanly of country house conveyances, have always held a special fascination for us. Aston Martin versions are the most famous, reportedly stemming from owner David Brown’s desire for a car that could carry his hunting dogs. While the handful of early DB5 and DB6 conversions are the most desirable, once in a while something a bit stranger pops up. Such is the case at Bonhams’ Aston Martin Works sale in Newport Pagnell, UK on May 21, where a one-off Lagonda Shooting Brake built in 2000 is set to cross the block for about $350,000 or so. |
| It’s the work of world renowned Switzerland-based Aston Martin specialists Roos Engineering, who are known to have created three Aston shooting brakes, but only one from a Lagonda. The fanciful ride, an example of the so-called ‘Series 3’ Lagonda that was the second iteration of William Town’s futuristic design that first appeared in 1976, was delivered new to a Middle Eastern gentleman resident in Monte Carlo. It was crafted from a 1986 model though work was not begun until 1996, taking four full years to complete. The exterior was finished in Antrim Blue and the interior trimmed in contrasting grey Connolly leather. Bond wishes he had one of these…. |
