Last month, it was reported that Akshay Kumar gave his nod to a film based on the 1989 Raniganj coal mine disaster, with the actor being approached to play mining engineer Jaswant Singh Gill, the hero of the rescue operation. Earlier this week, there is news of Ajay Devgn also playing Gill's role in a Tinu Suresh Desai-directed project. To mention, Desai had directed Akshay, who has a penchant of playing real life characters, in Rustom (2016), based on the Nanavati murder case.

Earlier it was reported that Akshay Kumar would bring to life Jaswant Singh Gill, in the movie. But now the Rustom star is out of the movie and Ajay Devgn is reportedly playing the role of the former additional chief mining engineer, who made the effort and evacuated 65 coal miners trapped in a flooded mine in Raniganj, West Bengal. For this, Gill was awarded the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak in 1991, by President Ramaswamy Venkataraman.

According to a report by a leading tabloid, Devgn is stepping into the reel shoes of Gill and the film would be directed by Rustom director Tinu Suresh Desai.

Even as both the actors are looking for the same subject, Amritsar-based Gill tells mid-day he's been approached by many industry folks who wish to bring his story to the big screen. He said that several people have approached me, but it would be limited to talks only. He said he was recently approached on behalf of Ajay Devgn's team for the rights, which he has given the consent. He continued to say that, he hasn't met the actor and only talked with his representatives.

On being asked, if anyone from Akshay’s team had approached him, he said that he’s not a cinema person. He said that he does not know who wants to do what. But stated that Akshay is a good actor as well.

Gill said that he has nothing to do with the film industry, and vividly recalls the tragedy 28 years later. He said for him it was an incident that happened yesterday only."

We had earlier reported that Akshay Kumar would bring to life Jaswant Singh Gill, the hero of the 1989 Raniganj coalfield rescue operation, in a film. But now the Rustom star is out of the game and instead, Ajay Devgn is reportedly playing the role of the former additional chief mining engineer, who evacuated 65 coal miners trapped in mine.

The makers have obtained the rights of the yet-untitled film and work on the script has already begun. Ajay Devgn is currently shooting for Baadshaho, which will be followed by a return to the Golmaal Again sets.
