Skalzang Dolma, An inspired change maker that leads technology and impart digital skills to others of Leh World

The Digital Connectivity in Tribal areas are lower than that of anywhere in the country. How ever technology advancements now a days are bringing positive hope in the Tribal areas and Tribal Youth.A 27 year old Skalzang Dolma from the Bot Tribe in Leh district has turned her life around using Technology.

GOAL Program

 

Skalzang Dolma was born and brought up in a small village Tunah amidst peaks of the mountains ranges at a height of 34,000 meters. She has limited access to the internet facility and Digital Media services and so she was unable to express or share her viewpoints and experiences in this communication technology world.

A Sports person who participated in National Level Boxing and running in the National Ultra Marathon in Ladakh, She stopped playing due to major surgery and at that point of time she got to know about the Going Online As Leaders (GOAL) Program

This Program was launched on May 15, 2020 by Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Facebook (Now Meta) and aims to help tribal youth that helps to enhance their digital literacy and interpersonal skills  This program also provides mentor-ship that enables youth to discover their intuitive hidden talents that develops personality development skills  and allows them to contribute for the welfare of the society.

Skalzang took this great opportunity provided by the Ministry and Meta..With this program the youth of tribal communities will become digitally skilled and empowered persons.She met her mentor Ishtiaq Ali through GOAL Program and learnt Various skills like English and Hindi Speaking, Leadership Qualities, Confidence building,Entrepreneurial Skills.

Skalzang now runs a Facebook page with a name "Lamstan". She posts information, Photos and videos regularly in that page about her community that creates awareness about their culture and various activities. She has been receiving likes, comments and suggestions not only from users in the Ladakh region but also from other parts of the country.

The GOAL program has changed her life and has helped a lot to build her own venture called Lamstan Young Association. With the help of this at least one person from every household in her village has become a part of her association and provides a platform to share and teach each other Skills and Knowledge.

Craftsmen in her village like her grandfather create musical instruments and their traditional hats called "Sertot". These people are having great weaving and knitting skills. Their talent will also showcase to the world. They are now getting a few individual sales enquiries for Dramyin, The Traditional musical instrument on Skalzang's facebook page.

GOAL Program primarily focuses on three areas namely Digital Literacy, Leadership and  Life Skills  and Entrepreneurship skills across multiple sectors like Art and Culture,  Agriculture, Textiles, Handicrafts, Nutrition, Health etc.. 

In the First Phase the GOAL Program trained 167 tribal youth across the country. Recently MoTA and Meta  have launched GOAL 2.0 which will aim to digitally empower 10 lakh women and youth across the India.

Skalzang has completed her graduation from the University of Jammu and post graduation from the Central University of Jammu in National Security Studies. She got selected for Constable Post in Ladakh police. In Future she wants every tribal youth and women  living in the remote corners of the world to get inspired to hear her story and realize the true potential of Digital Platforms.
